The Publicist establishes and maintains relationships with media, and occasionally social media influencers and industry professionals. They secure placements in digital, print, radio, and TV media, highlighting a variety of angles and stories on behalf of their clients.
Publicists establish a client’s story/messaging and relay it to media through writing press releases, bios, pitch letters, audio and video news releases, media advisories, and even simple press invitations. They analyze all possible angles that the story is applicable to, and build media lists of relevant contacts. They then reach out to these contacts, and tailor the story to the journalists needs.
Follow up is a crucial part of this job as media often don’t see your initial e-mails, request additional materials, and even forget to write the article after committing to writing it. Publicists are also responsible for tracking results and forwarding them to clients.
Publicists work with fellow junior and senior publicists, directors of publicity, public relations, marketing, branding, and communications employees, and directly with their clients.
This role requires you to be a very strong writer as that is your key to establishing and maintaining relationships. You also need great verbal communication skills and phone follow up is often required, as well as meeting media in person. You be persistent as media placements aren’t always easy to come by. You’ll also need to be organized since you’ll be tracking hundreds of emails at a time, and tracking the results.
If you’re considering applying to be a publicist, your resume should show that you’re a strong and concise writer. It should also prove that you’re committed to getting great results, and have a strong work ethic. It should include instances where you’ve successfully multitasked, and handled high volumes of communication. Depending on how deep into your career you are, it should show that you have some relevant pre-existing contacts.
