The public relations account manager focuses heavily on the strategic side of public relations, and using pre-established, high-level relationships to execute it.
Account managers are largely responsible for creating a PR strategy, and ensuring that it’s executed. They do so by heavily researching what already exists in the PR space, relating that research to a client’s specific goals and objective, and utilizing creative tactics. They then evaluate these results, and continue to innovate and develop the strategic side of the campaign. While the core of the execution is delivered by account executives and coordinators, account supervisors have develop key relationships within the industry by this point in their career. They complement the work of the others involved in the campaign by leveraging quality relationships over quantity. Their days often consist of research, client communication, developing and delegating strategy, media relations, editing press materials, and connecting with key media, influencers and celebrities. These responsibilities are balanced with keeping the campaign’s deadlines and responsibilities on track, checking in with who is responsible for what tasks. Account managers report to account supervisors, account directors, and PR vice presidents. They typically manage account executives, account coordinators, and interns in an agency setting.
Account managers should have pre-established relationships with media and influencers in whichever industry they’re applying. They should be able to create a sound PR strategy, and know which tasks and relationships are appropriate to pursue independently, and which they should delegate. They should be creative, have project management skills, and know how to manage others by this stage of their career. Additionally, being an account supervisor is not a 9-to-5 job.
