The Operations Research Analyst uses mathematical methodology and analysis to assist in managers in making decisions, policies, and product or service development.
Operations research analysts work off of specific learned models to conduct a thorough analysis of a company or organization. The goal of running information through these models is to gauge efficiency and to isolate areas of improvement. This data is collected to aid management in making decisions about budget, staff, product and service development, strategic planning, and ranking against competitors. A large part of what an operations research analyst does is assigning a quantitative value to the data. They break specific systems down and assign a numerical value to them, adding validity to their findings and giving managers a quick indication of where there strengths and weaknesses are.
In addition to collecting this data and assigning it’s value, and operations research analyst should be able to make recommendations from their findings as well as implement corresponding systems.
Operations research analysts typically work for a firm, but sometimes work in house or independently. They report to senior operations research analysts and work in collaboration with company managers.
To be a successful operations research analyst, you should be able to turn vague issues into concrete, solvable situations. You should be mathematically minded, but also able to interpret overarching issues that aren’t yet numerically sound. You should also be a problem solver, not only identifying what isn’t working with a situation, but recommending how to solve it.
If you’re considering applying to be an operations research analyst, your resume should show that you have previous experience in a related field and are familiar with the models needed to test companies in this manner. It should also show that you’re able to think critically about problems, and solve them based on founded evidence. Finally it should show that you’re able to streamline fractured issues and companies, giving them a tangible value rather than swimming in the gray area.
