The Data Analyst is responsible for collecting data, typically in numbers, and translating those numbers into plain English for upper management to understand. Every business collects data anywhere from sales figures to costs including market research, logistics, and even transportation.

The Data Analysts job is to analyze these numbers, figures, costs and use that information to help the company make better business decisions whether that means cutting costs, hiring more sales members, or re-branding to market towards a different market segment to increase revenue. Without a Data Analyst, a business would not be able to understand what is successful and what is unsuccessful moving forward.

Data Analysts must work with large amounts of data, which includes facts, figures, and numbers and they must be able to read, review, and translate that data easily for others to understand its meaning. This is a very specialized job and requires a lot of education on how to read data. Another important skill a Data Analyst must have is communication. Since their findings must be translated to upper management, they should be able to communicate clear and concisely to achieve the best results. This includes writing down any results and presenting the research as well. Along with reading, writing, and analyzing, the analyst should be a critical thinker with extremely astute match skills.

The pay structure of a Data Analyst depends on experience and what field they may be in including Financial Analysts, Market Research Analysts and Operations Research Analysts. Financial analyst can make on average around $70,000 annually, Market Research Analysts can make on average around $60,000 annually, and Operations Research Analysts can make on average around $68,000 annually.

If you are applying for a Data Analyst position, your resume should include the amount of experience you have in years, tasks, and companies. Your experience will reflect the amount of work you have done and the scale of data you have analyzed. Be sure to also include what sort of data you had to analyze including sales figures, costs the company incurs, and market research information. With this information explain how your data findings helped make the company run smoother and adjust any problems that may have been occurring. Lastly, always include any team work you may have done or any presentations, meetings, or papers you have to present to upper management or even shareholders.
