The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for performing all activities that are related to maintaining a successful database environment. This includes the security, integrity and performance of the database. They must ensure that all data remains consistent across the database and is clearly defined so the information can then be presented to analysts and stakeholders. While ensuring the data is constant, the DBA will also help manage a companies’ information by identifying the best ways to organize, store, and present data according to the needs of the end user. Database Administrators are expected to be knowledgeable of any emerging technologies and any new design approaches to make the best decisions for the integrity of a database. Many companies offer on-the-job training to keep DBA’s up to date with a range of database products, which typically include Structure Query Language (SQL), SAP or Oracle. These databases are used with many different companies large and small and are important to understand as much as possible. DBA’s are also responsible for the security of data by managing access, privileges and information migration. This includes developing a backup and recovery strategy. Keeping these secure ensures only a few people have access and if something goes wrong or there is a breach, the investigation has a smaller field to start searching for the problem. Administrators are also responsible for installing and configuring database management software and software upgrades. After installation and configuration of the software, DBA’s then help devise network strategies to test the systems and develop system standards across the company. Once the standards are set, they will then provide users with training on the new database software and systems.
