The business operations manager supervises the coordination of each branch of a company or organization. A multitasking position, they take a high level view of a company’s progress, and identify what’s missing in areas that are failing.

Business operations managers ensure that a company’s segments are all working harmoniously and to their highest potential. They’re responsible for coordinating activities and functions within these segments, managing the staff that fulfills them, and maintaining the company’s overall health in doing so. They’re also responsible to ensure they company’s financial success, evaluating and devising budgets, gauging new business and sales, and keeping the company’s finances on track. It’s the business operations manager’s job to effectively communicate company goals and objectives and make sure that they are being met, and in doing so operating within financial guidelines. They should also oversee new product and service developments initiated by the company.

Business operations managers are function fairly independently within a company or organization, but report to C-Level executives, presidents, and vice presidents.

To be a successful business operations manager, you should be able to analyze company success from a high level view, and implement strategies and systems that improve company health from top to bottom. They should be comfortable serving as a lynchpin as they tie together so many departments. They should be expert communicators and problem solvers, finding solutions to problems and improving situations that need support.

If you’re considering applying to be a business operations manager, your resume should show your previous experience in HR and/or financial planning, as this is a very senior position. It should also show that you’re extremely committed to your work and solutions aren’t always easy to come by.

Finally, it should show that you know how to creatively provide solutions and tactical thinking to better the health of a company or organization, and provide examples of previously doing so.
