The IT Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing a company’s information technology projects. They coordinate each project phrase from development to installation and act as a liaison between the clients, vendors, and consultants. Communication is crucial to this position as they are expected to advise businesses or the company on technology and how it can help them perform better. Once they advise on what technology is best, they are then responsible for overseeing the new systems design and development to integrate smoothly into the existing system. During the project phases, an IT Manager must stay on time and within budget as well as plan effectively, justify accordingly to stakeholders, and evaluate each phase to ensure quality and effectiveness.

IT Managers start any project off by speaking with other management teams or clients to find out what they need in their new information technology project. Once they analyze their needs they develop a solution and advise the teams or clients objectively on where new IT implementation might make a difference to improve the business. Once approved, they plan the stages of the project and determine cost and time. Then they manage a team below them during each phase from testing to production and design. This includes coordinating a smooth transition from an older technology to the new one without affecting the staff on a day to day basis. Each phase is also evaluated by the IT Manager and reports are given to the clients to check speediness of completion, budget, and quality.

Organization is critical to be a successful IT Manager and every project managed should have a clear and concise path with constant check-ins to determine if the project is going smoothly. With managing a vast amount of people, strong leadership skills are required to run the project, which means communication is vital. Other than leading the project, IT Managers must analyze each phase of the project as well as problem solve during if any problems arise. These problems can be very complex and a strong understanding of complex information is required especially being able to communicate any complex system language into a business language that clients can easily understand.

If applying for an IT Manager position, your resume should include which projects you’ve worked on starting from what the client needed, your suggestion for a solution, how long the project lasted, how much was your budget and were you successful in staying within the budget, and did you complete the project to your clients satisfaction. Clients and companies’ are always interested in the budget you had to work with as it shows the size of the project you were in charge of. Also include how many team members you managed while on the project. Listing the technology you suggested for the client and why is also a great insight on how you make your analytical decisions for each individual especially if it was a successful integration or transition.
