The Logistician is responsible for analyzing and coordinating an organization’s supply chain – the system that moves a product from the supplier to the consumer. This system requires someone to oversee the entire life cycle of a product, which the Logistician does by overseeing how a product is acquired, distributed, allocated, and delivered. During distribution they must also track transportation, inventory, and shipment of the product. In order to be successful with this, the Logistician is responsible for negotiating contracts with the suppliers and transportation companies, and are often tasked with improving the efficiency and speed of shipments while reducing cost for the company.
In order to be a successful Logistician, they must understand sophisticated software systems to plan and track the movement of good. These software programs are tailored specifically to manage logistical functions, such as procurement, inventor management, and other supply chain planning and management systems. They are very complicated to understand and operate and requires training and schooling to master these systems.
The entire logistical process starts with the Logistician looking for economies in the movement of materials and parts while a product is still in the design process. They ensure required parts and materials arrive on time and whole from suppliers and then tracks the movement of the parts from the warehouse to the production facility.
Once the acquisition of the materials has been received at the warehouse and the manufacturing of the product is complete, they will then arrange for the shipment and distribution of the final product to the customers. In order for this entire process to be successful, the Logistician will develop relationships with the suppliers who provide the materials, the transportation companies that deliver both the materials and the final products, and finally the warehouse managers, production personnel, or end user that uses the product. The business relationship with all of these service providers makes the difference when you need a product to move faster or the materials to be transported safely and on time.
If applying for a Logistician position, your resume should include the entire supply chain life cycle you oversaw for your client including the development of materials, the shipment of those materials to the manufacturer, the development of the product at the manufacturer, and finally the delivery of the product to the customers. Logistical software is key to mastering this position, your resume should include any and all specific logistic software that you are well versed in. Cost and efficiency is critical for a client, so if you were able to speed up a supply chain and save some money on the way, your resume should focus heavily on those accomplishments for that client.
