The Systems Engineer is responsible for coordinating the construction, maintenance, and expansion of an organization’s computer systems or information systems. They are sometimes referred to as a Systems Engineer, IS Engineer, Information Systems Engineer, IT Engineer, and Network Systems Engineer because of their vast duties with engineering an organization’s systems and infrastructure. It is important for a Systems Engineer to be organized and to work well under high pressure and time constraints. Many companies cannot afford to wait for an entire system or infrastructure to malfunction, so the Engineer must work quickly and efficiently to complete a project on time.

Systems Engineers manage and monitor all installed systems and infrastructure within a company, which includes installing, configuring, testing and maintaining operating systems, application software, and system management tools. During these processes, they will also maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies. They also monitor and test application performance regularly for potential bottlenecking, which they will then identify possible solutions and then work alongside developers to implement those fixes if necessary.

As well as working in installation and testing, the Systems Engineer coordinates system development tasks to include design, integration and formal testing. After coordination, they develop and complete actions in system specifications, technical and logistical requirements, and other disciplines. Designing and developing software may include several different types of software, such as computer games, business applications, operating systems, network control systems, and middleware. In order to design and develop these software systems, the Engineer must create and maintain programmatic and technical documentation to insure efficient planning and execution of the development is accurate. This requires a great deal of technical knowledge. With administration and performance tuning of applications, they may use Tomcat, JBoss, Apache, or Ruby. With virtualization of a system they must have experience with VMware. When designing and developing software, they write scripts using either shell scripts, Perl, Ruby, or Python. Lastly, when installing and configuring networks, they must have knowledge working with TCP/IP networks as well as working in a UNIX/Linux based environment.

If applying for a Systems Engineer position, your resume should include your technical knowledge within each field such as networking in UNIX/Linux based environments with TCP/IP networks, developing scripts with shell, Perl, Ruby, or Python, administering and tuning applications with Tomcat, JBoss, or Apache, and virtualization with VMware. Your resume should also include experience with configuring and installing computer systems for an organization, testing software applications and systems for potential bottlenecking and the suggestions you made and implemented to fix those problems, and the creation of computer manuals that convert instructions into computer language to assist with detailed algorithms that tell the computer what to do.
