Electrical engineers can cater to a variety of electrical areas of work, but typically focus on supplying power, how it’s generated, and if it can be generated more efficiently. They can do this from the onset, creating electrical blue prints and fleshing out prototypes, and can also diagnose issues when power supplies shut down, providing solutions and explanations. As the computer world vastly developments, so, too, does the growing field of electrical engineers. While it’s important to be very mathematically and scientifically capable, the creativity in problem solving with out of the box solutions is often underestimated.
Electrical engineers usually work in team settings and report to senior and lead engineers.
To be a successful electrical engineer, you should have a strong interest and passion in computer science, chemistry, and mathematics, and know how to apply translate this heavy mathematic and science knowledge into solutions. You should also be persistent, and committed to solving the problems regardless of how many failed attempts it may take. Finally, you should be a great communicator, and be able to explain technical jargon and in depth reports to customers and businesses.
If you’re considering applying to be an electrical engineer, your resume should show you have at minimum a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Additional schooling isn’t required for this position, but it’s definitely helpful and should be noted on your resume if you have or are currently pursuing it. It should show that you have a strong GPA and excellence in understanding math and science, as this is a growing and competitive field. Finally it should show examples of problem solving with math, science, and/or compute science skills through previous jobs, internships, and/or competitions.
