The Computer Systems Analyst is responsible for utilizing their knowledge in both information technology and business to study an organization’s current computer system, and then design information system solutions to help that organization to be more efficient in their operations. To help research the best technologies for their client, the Computer Systems Analyst must first start by understanding their client’s business and what they do on an everyday basis. This information is crucial to help discover a solution to their computer systems – hardware, software, and networks - since they are what drive the business to function.
Researching technologies and making educational decisions are not the only function of a Computer Systems Analyst. They oversee the entire lifecycle of the new systems starting with a cost and benefit analysis for the intended technology upgrades. If upper management approves the costs for an upgrade, the systems analyst will help oversee the installation of the new technology. After installation is successful, they will also test the system and train their client’s organization on the new upgrade.
Even after the full installation lifecycle, if any problems occur, the Computer Systems Analyst will also be the one to troubleshoot the problems. Since the systems analyst oversees the entire project, they can sometimes be seen as an IT Project Manager.
The job also requires an in-depth knowledge of a vast amount of technology. Far beyond simply understanding new system upgrades and installations for organizations, they also use data-modeling, which creates rules for the computer to follow when presenting data. These rules ensure faster decisions and quicker results. The analysts will even create flowcharts for engineers and programmers to follow when building the system. Since each system is unique to the type of organization it is, many analysts specialize in specific industries to be an expert in their field. Financial computer systems are vastly different to healthcare computer systems, so specializing in a certain field is helpful for a better understanding of what technology the organization will truly benefit from.
