The network engineer designs and implements computer networks across a variety of different industries, companies, and causes. While network administrators are focused on daily functionality, engineers focus on higher level, all encompassing responsibilities.
A highly analytical position, the network engineer bases his or her configurations based off of data, indicative of corporate and individual user needs. Based off of this analysis, a network engineer will diagnose which LAN, WAN, Internet, and intranet components provide the best fit for their client or company. They’re often times responsible for implementing hardware as well, finding what’s the best fit for a client or company’s infrastructure. Network engineers also consistently evaluate the full performance of the infrastructure, and make recommendations on substitutions that more adequately accommodate a client or company’s needs.
Network engineers usually report directly to a client or company, but may also have senior engineers or managers to report to. They also work closely with network administrators to ensure smooth running of operations.
To be a successful network engineer, you must be of an analytical mindset, aggregating both quantitative and qualitative data as a foundation for your implementations. You must also be well versed in a variety of infrastructure components to recommend, being fully aware of better options and upgrades when situations call for them. You should be an excellent communicator, too, translating complex and costly technicalities into digestible information for the clients, and consistently communicating with network administrators about the status of your implementations.
If you’re considering applying to be a network engineer, your resume should show that you’ve had previous experience in a junior engineer position or as a network administrator. It should also show examples of you diagnosing a clients needs based on research, filling them, and evaluating them. Finally, it should you’re up to date with the latest technologies, able to keep a client’s infrastructure relevant and current.
