A media planner evaluates and executes a brand’s most effective ad-buying route. They make their decisions off of research, demographic findings, and the budget they’re given.

A media planner is one of the few media-intensive roles that is reliant on a mathematical mindset. Budget is a crucial part of this position, and when it comes to buying ads, every dollar counts. With the digital world opening up so many non-traditional ad options, the possibilities are endless. It is the media planner’s job to gather research, evaluate the findings, and devise a comprehensive plan that incorporates the best value for their client. Media planners sometimes conduct research of their own, but also rely on research produced independently and by the outlet they’re looking to buy from. They then align that research with their own demographics, and make the most financially sound decision possible. It is their responsibility to maximize the value of each dollar spent, as it is a costly endeavor.

Media planners work independently or on behalf of brands that want to execute major ad campaigns without relying solely on an external agency. They report to marketing managers, in house advertising managers, or directly to CEO/COOs.

Media planners should be mathematical in their method but creative in their thinking, anticipating non-traditional but effective places to buy ads, and combining it with a support of traditional ad buying. You should be very analytical, and know how to translate research into tactics that will produce great results. You should also know how to stick to a budget, and keep additional costs, fees, and taxes in mind while planning.

If you’re applying to be a media planner, your resume should show that you’re analytical, and can create great results from research. It should also show that you’re able to communicate effectively as you’ll be connecting with a variety of vendors and sales people. It should demonstrate that you know how to squeeze the most amount of value from a budget, creating the highest potential campaign.
