The Features Writer is a content writer that specifically writes a variety of content for the Web including articles, reviews, blogs, manuals, and much more. Web content differs from other content because it must grab the attention of an average user who simply scans for keywords and facts. By using bold, engaging, and active titles with little but important content below, a Features Writer can grab the attention of a reader and keep their attention longer than an average written article. They should be creative and enterprising in helping shape our daily report. Writer/Producers will at times also work on enterprise stories. These can either be stories they are assigned, or ideally more often stories based on their own ideas. Another tactic used are bullet points to highlight the information they want their reader to obtain.

The Features Writer is also seen as producers and are expected to be able to write both features and news stories. In addition, they should be able to regularly generate story ideas on subjects that would appeal to the Digital audience. She/he should stay on top of stories that are making news or generating buzz at that moment, and be able to produce quick turns, while also showing creativity in storytelling and writing. Features Writers are expected to be strong writers who can shift from features to news and update stories quickly in breaking news situations. Writer/Producers are expected to stay on top of developments on stories they are covering -- through a combination of original reporting, staying on top of network guidance, watching the competition, and using social media tools to identify trending stories and topics.

Features Writers are hired for many different reasons, which may include editing web pages for better readability or a clearer message, proofread content before available on the web, write content for an employer based on the materials and information they’ve supplied, or research, write, and edit material from scratch. Due to the digital, fast-paced nature of the work, Web Content Writers must be familiar with several different platforms and can easily use the web or digital content management systems. Communication is key in this position since a hiring manager has specific needs, guidelines, and deadlines and the information must be correct the first time.

In order to be a successful Features Writer, they must have excellent title writing abilities as well as meta keyword use, search engine optimization (SEO), and description tags attached to a webpage for easy to locate web pages. Depending on the need of the employer, some writers must also be able to write in HTML or XML. The end goal of each writer is to achieve an optimal web page for search engine visibility, as well as achieve readability, legibility, usability, and credibility.
