The advertising intern supports the fast paced advertising environment in either an in-house or agency setting. They learn and understand the function of each role at the firm or company, and support multiple people across multiple accounts.

Advertising interns will get exposed to a variety of positions and how each one serves the account, and will start to gain perspective on what their focus is the broad advertising landscape is. Some internships will play to your specific strengths while others will call for your support across the board. These roles include new business, research, account management, media planning, creative/design, social media, and many more. Because the advertising landscape is so broad, these internships cater to many types of personalities, and usually demand a balanced creative, strategic, and mathematical skillset. Whether you’re at an agency or in house, you’ll get a firm grasp of what pieces comprise a campaign, and who is responsible for executing what part.

Advertising interns typically report to a specific HR representative or account leader, but are responsible for serving whoever needs their help most.

The skills needed to be a successful advertising intern depends on what role you’re looking to fulfill, but there are a few common denominators. You’ll have to be a great multi-tasker, and be comfortable working with many types of personalities. You’ll have to be independent, knowing both how to manage your own workload and time, and knowing when to ask questions as this is an introductory role. You’ll also need to grasp the big picture, understanding how your role and everyone’s role affects the process, and ultimately, the results for your client(s).

If you’re considering applying to be an advertising intern, your resume should show that you have a communications background and interest, and potentially some previous internship experience. It should show that you’re proactive, and have examples that demonstrate your thirst and ability to achieve great results. Depending on your role, it should also list the appropriate programs/applications that correlate with your skill set (ex: Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Suite, CAD, Social Media management tools, CRMs, etc.)
