The Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring the company complies with its outside regulatory requirements and internal practices. With the ever growing maze of laws, regulations, licensing and permits, the need for Compliance Officers are increased every day to ensure that companies and governing bodies stay in line with their internal policies and requirements. The officer may also be responsible for reviewing and setting standards for outside communications by requiring disclaimers in emails, or may examine new facilities to ensure they are accessible and safe. As well as outside standards, they can also design or update internal policies to mitigate any risk the company may have of breaking laws and regulations. The officer typically works as an independent and objective body that reviews and evaluates the compliance issues/concerns within the organization, which includes conducting internal audits. Compliance Officers are particularly in demand in the financial industry since the government steps up its enforcement of any anti-money laundering laws, especially in Wall Street or federal government agency. However, Compliance Officers are also present in many expanding fields such as health care, telecommunications and oil and gas. Each officer in every industry will start by assessing the organization and identifying the risks that organization faces. They will then design or implement controls to mitigate those risks and report any change in control that occurs. If they find laws that are being broken, or regulations that are not being followed, they are obligated to report this and is authorized to implement all necessary actions to ensure achievement of the objectives of an effective compliance program.
Compliance Officers will also work with other departments such as Risk Management, Internal Audit, Employee Services etc. to direct compliance issues to the appropriate existing channels for investigation and resolution. If the investigation produces unlawful activity, they will also consult with the Corporate Attorney as needed to resolve difficult legal compliance issues. While working with these other departments, the officer will also institute and maintain an effective compliance communication program, which can include promoting the Compliance Hotline, increasing awareness of Standards of Conduct, and understanding new and existing compliance issues and policies and procedures. After the program is in place, they will develop a training program for new employees and then monitor the performance of the Compliance Program to ensure its continued effectiveness.
If applying for a Compliance Officer position, your resume should include whether you worked for an independent Compliance agency or a specified organization. The diversity of employer types and needs require extensive specialized education and training, such as an environment Compliance Officer may need substantial scientific knowledge to perform tests that measure the environmental impacts of airborne and waterborne chemical releases. An intense knowledge of regulatory requirements and internal practices is mandatory, show this on your resume by your experience at each organization as well as continuing education and knowledge of the ever expanding and changing laws, regulations, licenses and permits. Being able to identify risks and knowing how to fix them is the main objective, so describe any experience you have had where you identified an organizations risk and what you did to implement controls to mitigate those risks. If laws are broken, be sure to include how you reported your findings and what appropriate measures were taken.
