The Management Analyst is responsible for proposing ways to improve an organization’s efficiency as well as advising managers how to make the organization more profitable through reduced costs and increased revenues. They are able to increase an organizations efficiency and profits by collecting and analyzing data of an organization’s policies, procedures, and structure and then recommends any changes they see necessary to reduce costs or boost revenue. Some Management Analysts work directly for the company that employs them, while the large majority of the people in this occupation work as consultants on a contractual basis and hired by an outside firm. Each project is vastly different depending on the company and the size of the project they need analyzed and some projects with a company can last years while others may only last a few months.

Management Analysts work also varies depending on what the company is requiring, which can be anywhere from managing their inventory to a complete organizational restructure. Because of this work variation, most Management Analysts specialize in certain areas or specific industries such as healthcare or telecommunications. Some of the most common problems that these analysts specialize in can be inventory management, reorganizing corporate structures, or eliminating duplicate and nonessential jobs. When an analyst specializes, they develop specific skills, which may help them when marketing their services. This is greatly needed when they are entered into a bidding system. A bidding system is how most Management Analysts are hired and is done when an organization solicits a proposal and each analyst will create their own proposal that explains what they will do, how they will do it, how much it will cost, and why they would be the best fit. After receiving all proposals from all of the analysts, the organization then reviews them and decides which one will be the best match for their needs and budget.

A breakdown of the entire process for a Management Analyst starts with gathering and organizing information about the problem a company is having that needs to be improved then they conduct on-site interviews with personnel to determine what methods and equipment they need. After that they analyze financial data and other reports to develop a solution or alternative practice for the organization. This may include recommending a new system, procedure, or organizational change. Lastly they confer with management that these are the steps they would like to take and then they start the improvements the organization needs.

If applying for a Management Analyst position, your resume should include how many bids/proposals you have worked on including the length of the project and the problem that the company needed help analyzing. If you are a specialized analysis, be sure to include the types of projects you did such as inventory management or reorganizing corporate structures. You may also be industry focused so include the type of industries you work for, such as healthcare or telecommunications. Most of this position is based off of experience and education in the field so add every project, education, and training you have that makes you more desirable to be considered for a bid.
