The Web Developer is responsible for writing well designed, testable, and efficient code using specific software to create web pages. They are also in charge of creating website layouts and user interfaces using standard web development technology including HTML and CSS. Since this job requires a lot of what is called ‘back-end’ work that creates and manipulates what a typical user sees on a website, the developer must be able to translate technical work into user-friendly visuals. While working on the back-end coding, the developer must stay plugged into emerging technologies and trends to ensure that the website is current and well maintained at all times. The internet is ever changing and growing, which means maintaining and updating websites are essential to stay relevant to a reader or subscriber.

A Web Developer is an integral part to a company or business because a company without any web presence is essentially obsolete in this day and age. The first thing most people do to find or research a company is search the web. Without a website, a user will move on to the next company with a web presence. Even if a company has a website, if the site is old-fashioned, difficult to navigate, has little to no information, and is too ad heavy, users and potential customers will quickly leave that page and move one. Without a Web Developer to help code a well-functioning and clean website, a company will not be seen on the ever growing internet.

Since web design is crucial for the user, the Web Developer must work hand in hand with the web designer to ensure coding is consistent with branding and style. The developer must also have a solid understanding of how web applications work including security, session management, and best development practices. On top of knowing programming skills HTML/CSS, security knowledge, and session management; Web Developers are typically asked to have knowledge in one of the following programming languages: PHP, ASP.NET, JavaScript, or Ruby on Rails.

If you are applying for a Web Developer position, your resume should include your proven working knowledge of HTML and CSS as well as any programming language you are fluent in. This is the first thing employers look for to ensure you are qualified for this technically driven position. You should also include any testing of the code you were involved in. Typically with Web Development, you write code, evaluate that code, test it, and work with others to check its viability. Be sure to include the lifecycle of your programming and coding to let future employers know you work as a team member throughout the entire cycle. This position is very detail driven with attainable results. Highlight your website achievements along with every detail of work that was done to create a well written and designed web page.
