The CAD designer should assists in the creation and execution of a design team’s clothing line illustration. While their input is limited in regards to conceptualization, this role is largely responsible for carrying out the plan that’s in place.
CAD (computer aided drafting) designers should be able to carry out the ideas passed down by senior members by coordinating exact technical specifications for sampling. They should also support in the coordinating the overall process of design, color, fit, and fabric. They should assist in the presentation creation and in building concept boards. CAD Designers or often known more so as Assistant textile designers should have sketching skills, and knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and CAD. They will have knowledge of the big picture, and it’s their responsibility to put that into action on a day-to-day basis.
CAD designers report textile designers, senior textile designers, and deputy design directors, and may manage assistant designers below them.
This role requires you to understand the ins and outs of design, fit, color, and fabric, and how your job connects to the bigger picture. You should be very detail oriented, and know not only when something is technically wrong, but also when it’s straying from the main seasonal concept. You should also have previous experience or an internship in this or a related design industry.
