Summary

Sophocles Zoullas leads Zenith Shipping as its Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer. Zenith is a privately held maritime investment and operating platform with interests across the tanker and dry bulk sectors, and it is the most recent of several shipping companies Zoullas has built over more than three decades. A Greek-American industrialist, investor, and maritime executive, he has spent his career building, financing, and managing global shipping businesses in both public and private markets, in work that sits at the intersection of global trade, energy logistics, industrial modernization, and long-term capital stewardship.
Zoullas founded Zenith Shipping in 2015 around a long-term, cycle-driven investment strategy, and the timing shaped the company. During the shipping downturn of 2015 to 2017, he deployed significant capital, acquiring assets at depressed valuations and assembling a diversified private fleet of crude tankers, product tankers, and dry bulk vessels.
Running Zenith as a private company has given him room to act. He can transact discreetly, keep strategic flexibility, and build a fleet without signaling his intentions to the market. TradeWinds captured that approach in a profile titled "Being a private shipowner means no one sees me coming."
Zenith followed two earlier ventures that Zoullas founded. As the founding principal of Delphin Shipping, he built a fleet of new Ultramax and Supramax bulk carriers and adopted fuel-efficient vessel design early. Working with leading shipyards and classification societies, he oversaw the development and construction of a new generation of eco-design bulk carriers at a time when fuel efficiency was only beginning to emerge as a driver of vessel economics and environmental performance. The program included the first fuel-saving bulk carrier delivered in China and ultimately produced what became the world's first fleet composed entirely of eco-design vessels.
Before Delphin and Zenith came Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc., which Zoullas founded in 2005 and led as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until 2015. Within eight months of its formation, he took the company through its initial public offering on Nasdaq, one of the earliest and most successful U.S. shipping IPOs of the modern era. Eagle Bulk grew to a 45-vessel fleet and became one of the world's most significant owners of Supramax dry bulk vessels, and in 2009 Fortune Small Business included it in its ranking of the 100 Fastest-Growing Small Public Companies in America. Zoullas oversaw a substantial newbuilding and fleet-expansion program there and introduced one of the industry's first fleet-wide charter-default insurance programs, pairing growth with disciplined risk management.
His career began at Norland Shipping & Trading Corporation, where he served as an executive officer and director from 1989 to 2005. His responsibilities covered vessel acquisitions, financing, chartering, insurance, technical oversight, and operating-cost management. In the late 1990s, as the International Safety Management (ISM) Code was introduced across the industry, he adopted the framework early, recognizing that transparent systems and disciplined operations would become essential to institutional capital, lenders, and global charterers.
Across these companies, Zoullas has acquired and sold more than 100 commercial vessels and commissioned over 40 newbuildings in Japan and China. He has raised billions of dollars across public and private capital markets through IPOs, secondary offerings, private equity, and structured debt financings.
His leadership approach rests on transparent governance, rigorous risk management, and long-term capital stewardship, and his work has built long-standing commercial relationships across Japan, China, Korea, Europe, and the United States. His record reflects disciplined capital deployment, judgment across multiple market cycles, and operating platforms designed to compound value over time.
Outside his own companies, Zoullas has held long-standing roles in international maritime governance. Beginning in 2008, he spent nearly two decades on the London P&I Club's Board of Directors and its Members' Committee. Since 2010, he has served on the Lloyd's Register North American Advisory Committee, including more than a decade as its Chairman. He is also Director Emeritus of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), a role that reflects his commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible maritime operations.
TradeWinds has named Zoullas to its Power 100 ranking of influential figures in international shipping. He has received Marine Money's Annual Award and was honored as Man of the Year by the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce. Edwin Gould Services for Children and Families recognized his philanthropic work by naming him Person of the Year.
His views on global shipping and capital markets have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Barron's, TradeWinds, and Marine Money, and he has appeared on CNBC, Fox News, Jim Cramer, and Erin Burnett.
He has delivered keynote addresses at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business Private Equity Conference and at multiple Marine Money Ship Finance Forums. In 2026, he spoke at the Machina Summit in Paris on "The Next Industrial Supercycle: How Physical AI Will Transform the Global Industrial Complex," examining how robotics, automation, and industrial infrastructure are converging and what Physical AI could mean for global supply chains, labor markets, and long-term capital deployment.
Zoullas graduated with honors from Harvard College, where he was named a Harvard College Scholar, and earned an MBA from IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has been involved with Harvard's Lemann Program on Creativity and Entrepreneurship as a mentor and Advisory Board member, and he is Co-Chair of the Modern & Contemporary Art Committee at the Harvard Art Museums, and he previously served on the Dean's Cabinet of the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Beyond Harvard, he sits on the Board of Trustees of the Norton Museum of Art.
In New York, he served on the Board of The Episcopal School in the City of New York from 2002 to 2022 and spent nearly two decades as an Advisory Board Member of NYC Parents in Action. He was also a co-producer of Cradle of Champions, a documentary about New York's Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament that was released on Showtime in 2018.
Today, Sophocles Zoullas continues to lead Zenith Shipping with the approach that has carried him through more than three decades in shipping, combining entrepreneurship, public-company leadership, private investment, and institutional governance with a steady focus on disciplined capital allocation, risk management, innovation, and long-term value creation.
