Summary

Ray Lucia Sr. is an American retired Certified Financial Planner, author, and media figure best known for creating the Buckets of Money® retirement strategy. This time-segmented approach reshaped retirement income planning for advisors and investors nationwide. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he served as President and CEO of Raymond J. Lucia Companies, Inc. for over fifteen years, earning national recognition for combining disciplined planning with clear communication and investor-focused education.

Born on April 3, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ray moved with his family to Poway, California, at age 10, and grew up in San Diego County. He developed strong interests in both academics and athletics, excelling as a quarterback. He played college football at Palomar Junior College before transferring on scholarship to Western Illinois University, later attending San Diego State University and Cal Western before knee injuries ended his athletic career.

Ray earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from United States International University and began working as a high school teacher and football coach. As his family expanded, his curiosity about economics and investing deepened, leading him to pursue a new professional path. He entered the financial services industry and founded Raymond J. Lucia Companies, Inc., and RJL Enterprises, Inc., building firms rooted in education, planning discipline, and long-term retirement-income strategies.

Through focused leadership and a client-centered philosophy, Ray grew his advisory practice into a billion-dollar assets-under-advisement business in roughly seven years. His firms became known for blending financial planning with large-scale seminars and media outreach. Industry honors followed, including Registered Rep. magazine’s Outstanding Broker Award in 2004 and recognition in 2008 as one of the Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors in America.

Ray’s most influential contribution, the Buckets of Money® strategy, organizes retirement assets into short, intermediate, and long-term segments aligned with spending needs and risk tolerance. Retirees draw income from safer assets first, while allowing growth-oriented investments more time to recover. Through books and public education, Ray challenged the traditional 4 percent rule and promoted time-segmented portfolios designed to sustain income and manage early-retirement risk.

A lifelong musician, Ray Lucia Sr. brought performance skills into broadcasting when he launched The Ray Lucia Show in 1991, blending financial education with classic rock and live audience interaction. The program later achieved national radio and television syndication. After nearly thirty years on air and frequent appearances on major networks, he retired from daily broadcasting in 2019 and continues to write, mentor advisors, perform music, and remain active in the San Diego community.
