Summary

Ramsey Elkholy is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and anthropologist who founded the indietronica collective Monotronic in 2016. He conceived the group as a shared sonic organism where instruments fuse into a unified current. Guided by a communal philosophy, he emphasizes collaboration rather than individual spotlight, encouraging each contributor to shape the music with personal textures and creative insight.

Elkholy’s academic path informs that vision. He earned a PhD in Anthropology and authored Being and Becoming: Embodiment and Experience Among the Orang Rimba of Sumatra, a study of rainforest foragers in Indonesia. His research examined how environment, ritual, and identity intersect. That perspective carries into his songwriting, where rhythm and atmosphere mirror collective experience and cultural memory.

His artistic voice was further shaped by travel. After three years backpacking across Asia and other regions, studying Indian music in Calcutta, and completing two years of fieldwork in Sumatra, he developed a sensitivity to layered rhythm and organic sound. Ramsey Elkholy Monotronic has described the rainforest at night as an intricate symphony. Raised in New York, he now records from a Los Angeles home studio.

Monotronic’s 2026 album Waiting for You reflects the evolution of that collaborative approach. The record features bassist Mohini Dey on Close Enough and acclaimed drummer Omar Hakim throughout. Music videos for tracks including Looking Away and Everything Moves premiered at number one on VEVO, demonstrating the band’s ability to unite compelling visuals with expansive production.

Blending indie rock, pop, and electronic textures, the album pairs introspective lyrics with cinematic structure and polished synth arrangements. Everything Moves unfolds within a high-energy escape room setting, while Kettle Song integrates stylized choreography and dramatic imagery. Many songs were written during time in Tulum, where open coastal landscapes shaped the album’s reflective tone.

Since their 2019 self-titled debut, Monotronic has earned praise from outlets such as Rolling Stone and Relix. The rotating collective has included musicians associated with influential artists across genres. Singles like Kids of Summer and In Between gained strong playlist placements and critical recognition, reinforcing Elkholy’s reputation for genre-fluid songwriting and immersive collaboration.
