Lab works on Aromatic plants and focuses on the genes that are involved in the development of trichomes and secondary metabolites of the plant Mentha. Trichomes studies are important because specialised metabolites such as terpenoids are stored in the trichomes, which are of great economic and commercial importance. These are widely used for flavours, fragrances, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.Transformation protocols are necessary to metabolically engineer the mint plant for studying monoterpene metabolism and its regulation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Transformation and regeneration of tobacco and basil plants with genes involving in the secondary metabolism of tobacco and basil plants using Tissue culture.DNA and RNA isolation,PCR’s.
- responsible for standardizing tissue culture media for different stages of tobacco,Basil and mint,inoculating explants in these medias for regeneration of whole plant.
- Done Gene transfer experiments using Bombardment on different explants such as Roots and Leaves of Mint.
- Preparation of samples for Flow Cytometry and Green house management.
- Lab buyer and Lab safety coordinator.
