Profile:
Summary
Patrick Mahaffy's role marks his career as CEO of Clovis Oncology, a company he helped found in 2009. Under his guidance, Clovis not only developed but also successfully marketed significant cancer treatments in the U.S. and Europe, including therapies for ovarian and prostate cancers. Furthermore, under his tenure, Clovis began exploring targeted radionuclide therapy, an innovative approach to cancer treatment. Despite these advancements, the company ceased operations in late 2022 due to challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer diagnosis rates and regulatory issues related to its drug classes.
Before his tenure at Clovis, Mahaffy led Pharmion as CEO from 2000 until Celgene acquired it in 2008. He also held the CEO position at Nexstar Pharmaceuticals from 1992 until its acquisition by Gilead Sciences in 1998. The drugs developed during his leadership at these companies are still considered the standard of care or belong to a class that remains the standard of care for their respective conditions.
Mahaffy's early career was in finance; he served as an investment banker at Warburg Pincus from 1986 until 1992, following his academic achievements in international affairs. He holds a Master's degree from Columbia University and a Bachelor's degree from Lewis and Clark College, his alma mater, where he later served as a Board of Trustees member.
Aside from his corporate roles, Mahaffy is also a committed philanthropist, although he keeps these activities discreet. His philanthropic focus primarily lies in supporting family assistance programs and other charitable causes that aid needy individuals.
On a personal note, Mahaffy is a dedicated sports enthusiast who is passionate about hiking and golf. He also has a keen interest in archaeology, sparked by a significant find on his property in 2009—tools dating back to the Clovis period, 13,000 years ago. This discovery led to the Cache, one of the few Clovis-age artifacts found in North America, now exhibited at the University of Colorado History Museum.
While Mahaffy has achieved considerable professional success, he values maintaining a private life and enjoying time with his family and close friends away from the limelight of his professional world. His multifaceted career and interests showcase a leader who not only drives innovation in cancer treatment but also thoughtfully contributes to his community and personal passions.
