Jonathan Pasternak

The Pingry School is where the record of Jonathan Pasternak begins. He graduated cum laude with the class of 1981 and went on to Brown University as a member of the class of 1985, majoring in American History and Literature. Education would remain a significant influence on both his professional and personal life, shaping the direction his career later took as well as the commitments he holds today.

From those years, Jonathan Pasternak went on to build a 36-year career in restructuring and distressed debt, representing parties across a wide range of industries. His primary specialization became the reorganization and restructuring of private and public companies, and over the course of that career he represented hundreds of individual and corporate clients. His work covered debtor and creditor representation, workouts, recapitalizations, asset sales, and complex court-supervised proceedings, carried out for business owners, institutional stakeholders, and court-appointed representatives charged with overseeing financially distressed companies.

Alongside that core work, he developed extensive experience in commercial real estate and finance matters. He handled distressed property issues, debt restructuring tied to real estate and business asset portfolios, and transaction-driven reorganizations. Whether a matter moved through formal proceedings or ended in a negotiated resolution, he applied financial analysis and legal strategy while keeping the client's business objectives and circumstances in view. That pairing of financial analysis and legal strategy became a consistent thread across the many functions of his work.

For more than 20 years, Jonathan managed his own boutique law firm focused on restructuring and reorganization matters. He directly led the firm's operations while carrying an active and voluminous caseload, working closely with clients, interested parties, and a range of professionals and court institutions through reorganizations and court-supervised proceedings. Two decades at the head of a specialized firm demanded considerable operational oversight, careful client advisory work, leadership, and matter-level strategy. The experience strengthened his skills as both a practitioner and an organizational leader in the restructuring field.

Recognition from peers and professional organizations followed. In 2017, Jonathan Pasternak was named the YJP Professional of the Year for his long-term contributions to restructuring initiatives, one of several notable accolades he received. He was also a Super Lawyer for more than 15 consecutive years. Through it all, he kept his commitment to commercial real estate, distressed debt, and finance-driven restructurings. He has lectured at numerous industry conferences and at his former secondary and law schools, has been routinely sought for interviews and quotes on large-scale restructurings, and has appeared on radio and television throughout his career. His many leadership roles have earned him considerable industry recognition.

His ties to Pingry and Brown continued well past his school years. He served as a class representative for both schools, coordinating alumni and class-based initiatives, and he maintains active ties with both communities to this day. The connection runs through his family as well: his spouse and two of his three children are Brown graduates, and the family's alumni involvement extends to ongoing participation and outreach.

Service to his community has run in parallel with his career. For 11 years, Jonathan served on the Board of Trustees of Temple Sinai of Bergen County, where, as one of the board's longest-serving trustees, he oversaw governance, planning, and fiduciary responsibilities. Few individuals have held the position for as long as he has. He contributes to numerous charities and community efforts, including food and clothing drives and educational organizations, and he regularly donates to community initiatives launched by Pingry School, Brown University, and Tenafly, New Jersey, where he resides, aligning his philanthropy with the institutions that have played important roles in his development. He also actively contributes to educational, religious, and charitable initiatives through various not-for-profit institutions. Throughout his career, he has provided pro bono legal services to individuals, small businesses, and local not-for-profit organizations.

Music has been a constant as well. Jonathan Pasternak is an accomplished musician and performer, well known among his professional peers, and music remains an active pursuit that adds a creative dimension to his professional career. He values the preparation, timing, and technical control that performing requires, and he finds those disciplines as rewarding as the skills he has employed throughout his restructuring career. He is also a well-known archivist and field recorder for live music and concerts. In Tenafly, he has donated significant time coaching at both recreational and travel levels and performing at community events.

Today, Jonathan Pasternak is a distressed debt and commercial real estate advisor and consultant, drawing on more than thirty years of experience managing complex financial transactions. Working in either a legal or an advisory capacity, he has established mutually favorable relationships with companies, lenders, investors, fiduciaries, and other professionals. His skill set centers on corporate reorganization, distressed debt, and commercial real estate, and his career spans stabilization, restructuring, and matters both in and out of court-supervised proceedings. In financially distressed environments where legal judgment and business evaluation are often intertwined, he has often been called on to negotiate between multiple stakeholder groups, conduct detailed financial reviews, and carefully navigate court procedure, always with the goal of helping others.
