Summary

Jeff Derderian is an award-winning investigative journalist with more than two decades of experience in television and radio reporting. Known as a “Reporter’s Reporter,” he has earned three Emmy Award nominations and received both the Edward R. Murrow Award and several Associated Press Awards. His career reflects a deep commitment to uncovering the truth, delivering exclusive reports, and holding institutions accountable through in-depth journalism.

Over the years, he has covered many of the most important stories in recent American history. Jeffrey Derderian was one of the first television reporters from New England on the scene after the 9/11 attacks and spent three weeks in New York City reporting on the destruction and its aftermath. He also covered the Columbine School Shooting, one of the earliest mass school shootings in the U.S., and reported on the historic return of an astronaut to space. His ability to report in high-pressure situations with accuracy and clarity has earned him widespread respect.

Derderian has also been featured on national platforms, including storm coverage on The Today Show and reports aired on CNN. Among both peers and the public, he is known for his strong work ethic, careful research, and professional approach to challenging stories.

Jeff is a freelance investigative reporter for WTNH-TV in New Haven, Connecticut, covering stories across the Hartford market. His recent Emmy-nominated piece, “How Technology Is Changing How Emergency Responders React,” explored a real-time video system three former Yale students developed. The technology, now available to municipalities nationwide at no cost with optional upgrades, is being introduced in Connecticut and offers the potential to transform 9-1-1 emergency response.

Derderian's reporting has influenced public policy. One of his investigations into the murder of a visiting nurse led to new legislation designed to improve safety for nurses and home healthcare workers in Connecticut. His stories often highlight public safety, government accountability, and community issues that need greater visibility.

He continues to contribute to both digital and on-air content for WTNH-TV. His coverage has included a city mayor’s apology for controversial comments and an exclusive criminal story a national outlet picked up. He previously worked at News 12 Connecticut in Norwalk, focusing on long-form and investigative stories.

Earlier in his career, Jeff spent over six years at WHDH-TV in Boston as a reporter and weekend fill-in anchor. He was one of the first reporters from the region to provide live coverage from New York City after the 9/11 attacks. Before that, he worked at WLNE-TV in Providence, leading the investigative segment “You Paid for It,” exposing political waste and corruption. He also served as a weekend anchor and regularly filled in on weekday evening newscasts.

His background also includes work in radio, where he hosted a live news and interview show in Boston. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Rhode Island College in Providence.

Jeff Derderian supports various charitable causes and donated to a Connecticut domestic violence startup group. He contributes regularly to organizations such as the Salvation Army, Big Sisters, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Food Bank, and the Tomorrow Fund, which assists children undergoing cancer treatment and their families. In his time, he enjoys running, staying active, and spending time with his dogs. Jeff remains committed to ethical journalism, giving a voice to those who need it most and telling stories that have lasting impact.
