Summary
Jason Pruet is a physicist and technology leader with over 20 years of experience spanning science, national security, and public service. Currently, he is a member of the technical staff at OpenAI, where he is part of the Mission Alignment team, ensuring AI is developed and used to benefit humanity. With a Ph.D. in Physics from UC San Diego, Jason has held leadership roles at prominent national laboratories, including Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos, and spent nearly a decade leading intelligence, science, and engineering programs related to nuclear weapons.
Jason's academic journey began at the University of California, San Diego, where he earned his Ph.D. in Physics. His research, guided by George Fuller, focused on the physics of gamma-ray bursts, particularly the role of weak processes in the engines and fireballs associated with these cosmic phenomena. This early research laid the foundation for his future contributions to astrophysics and nucleosynthesis.
After completing his doctorate, Jason joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) as a postdoctoral researcher under a SciDAC Supernova grant. He later became the group leader for computational nuclear physics, where his work spanned national security missions, including stockpile stewardship, detection technologies for clandestine nuclear materials, and forensic attribution. Jason’s expertise in these critical areas helped advance the national security landscape, particularly in nuclear nonproliferation.
In 2011, Jason transitioned to federal service, taking a role at the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). There, he managed programs assessing the US nuclear stockpile, modeling, and the Capabilities for Nuclear Intelligence program. His leadership in these areas contributed significantly to the nation's nuclear security and intelligence efforts, leading to recognition from the Secretary of Energy and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. As Director of the Office of Engineering for Stockpile Assessments and Responsiveness at NNSA, he oversaw a $500 million portfolio that ensured the resilience of the US nuclear deterrent.
Jason’s leadership continued at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where he directed the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program. In this role, he ensured the nuclear stockpile’s safety without the need for underground testing. Jason also co-founded the National Security AI Office at LANL, aimed at preparing for the transformative opportunities and risks of AI in national security.
In 2025, Jason Pruet joined OpenAI, where he works on the Mission Alignment team to support AI’s development for societal benefit. At OpenAI, he collaborates with researchers, policymakers, and nonprofit organizations, contributing to both scientific and philanthropic initiatives that leverage AI to address national security challenges and broader societal needs.
