Summary
Thomas Gratzer, MD, is an experienced psychiatrist specializing in general and forensic psychiatry with a professional career spanning more than three decades. Based in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, he has provided psychiatric care at several respected medical institutions, including Regions Hospital, Fairview University Medical Center, United Hospital, and Psych Recovery. He continues to maintain a demanding clinical schedule that includes patient care, psychiatric evaluations, and forensic consultations.
During his extensive career, Dr. Thomas Gratzer has held numerous leadership and clinical positions in mental health. He served as Senior Forensic Psychiatrist at the Minnesota Security Hospital from 1995 to 2002 and later became a consulting psychiatrist for the Minnesota Department of Corrections. In that role, he focused on the psychiatric treatment of incarcerated youth and individuals requiring specialized mental health services within correctional settings.
Dr. Gratzer also spent more than twenty years as an attending psychiatrist at United Hospital in St. Paul, where he treated patients with severe psychiatric conditions and contributed to the development of patient care practices. His leadership within the psychiatric community was recognized when he served as medical staff president at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. His career reflects a continued commitment to advancing mental health treatment and forensic psychiatric practice.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Gratzer made substantial contributions to psychiatric education. From 2002 through 2021, he served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Throughout his academic career, he lectured medical students, psychiatry residents, and law students at institutions including the University of Manitoba, Regions Hospital, DePaul Law School, and Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Outside psychiatry, Dr. Gratzer has achieved significant success in computer science and software development. He won first prize at the Manitoba Science Fair for a computer program and participated in Prince Philip’s International Science Fortnight in London. He also coauthored FAST BASIC: Beyond TRS-80 BASIC and contributed to the development of VP-Info, a database programming language for IBM PC systems that sold widely across international markets.
Dr. Thomas Gratzer has published several peer-reviewed articles on forensic psychiatry, treatment approaches, and mental health law. His work earned multiple academic and research honors from respected psychiatric and forensic organizations. Born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, he comes from a family of academics and physicians. Outside of medicine, he enjoys skiing, tennis, traveling, exercising, and supporting educational initiatives connected to his university community.
