Experience

2005 May - 2011 Apr
Investigations Probation Officer
United States Court / Denver, CO

My time with Federal Probation primarily revolved around working for nine U.S. District Judges, assisting them in sentencing hundreds of criminal defendants. There is a 10 week span of time from the day a defendant is found guilty to when he/she is sentenced. During this time, I was tasked to conduct a comprehensive study of that defendant – analyzing all of the evidence of the crime at hand, detailing the previous crimes he/she had committed, conducting an exhaustive investigation into the defendant’s background, including in-depth interviews with family members, friends, and associates. Additionally, I conducted a thorough dissection of the complex Federal Sentencing Laws as they related to the defendant. I then summarized all of the aforementioned information in a report ranging from 25 to 50 pages. My six years with Federal Probation helped me acquire the ability to work in a pressured, time-sensitive environment. I also learned how to work as a team with a diverse range of individuals who had conflicting interests including defense lawyers and prosecutors. The job also helped me to improve my writing skills exponentially. My reports were frequently lauded by some of the finest Judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers in the criminal justice system.

1988 Apr - 2005 May
Special Agent
United States Department of the Treasury / Denver, CO

During my nearly two decades as a S/A with the U.S. Treasury Department, the majority of my cases revolved around the detection, investigation and prosecution of individuals for laundering illicit funds through the U.S. and foreign financial systems. During this time period, I was responsible for over 100 money laundering investigations which resulted in a number of individuals being prosecuted and imprisoned for laundering their ill-gotten gains. In addition to carrying a full money laundering case load, for the last 10 years of my career, I was in charge of the Denver Field Office’s SAR/AML/CFT program. This required an extensive knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, as well as the FATF 40+9 Standards. I was also responsible for setting up one of the first Financial Intelligence Units (FIU’s) in the area, which required interagency cooperation and diplomacy. My duties in the SAR/AML/CFT program also necessitated constant cooperation with a myriad of both traditional financial institutions as well as DNFBP’s, keeping them up-to-date on new developments in AML/CFT laws. From 1988-2005, I gave hundreds of presentations to banks and other financial institutions regarding how to bolster their AML/CFT programs, as well as how to detect and report suspicious financial transactions to the law enforcement community.
