Summary
From the beginning of his professional journey, Doug Shows has operated in environments where calm thinking and responsibility are essential. His career has been shaped by roles that demand preparation, fairness, and the ability to make decisions without hesitation. These expectations influenced him early and continue to guide his work today. Over the years, he has built experience across several fields, including college basketball officiating, financial advising, business ownership, and mediation, while serving individuals and families throughout the Atlanta area for more than twenty years.
Doug began officiating NCAA Division I men’s basketball in 1993. Entering the profession at that level required commitment, adaptability, and consistency. His steady performance and preparation earned him his first NCAA Tournament assignment in 1998. From that point forward, he officiated games across the country in major conferences and received multiple invitations to conference tournaments and postseason play. His experience includes several Final Four and Championship games, as well as international officiating assignments in more than 12 countries. These opportunities reflected long-term trust built through consistent evaluations and dependable performance.
Officiating at the highest collegiate level requires more than knowledge of rules. Doug maintained physical conditioning to keep pace with elite athletes and demanding schedules. He developed the ability to remain composed during disagreement, accept criticism without distraction, and make decisions with limited information and time. Veteran officials played an important role in his development, offering guidance that reinforced professionalism, discipline, and accountability as everyday expectations.
Doug also supported the growth of aspiring officials by sharing his experience. He provided practical insight on fitness, positioning, preparation, and professional conduct. His guidance was clear and realistic, emphasizing discipline and long-term effort rather than shortcuts. He encouraged others to understand the responsibilities of officiating and the importance of gradually earning trust.
Beyond basketball, Doug applied these same principles to financial services. As a Financial Advisor and business owner, he works with individuals, families, and business owners seeking retirement planning, financial strategy, and long-term protection. His clients value clear communication, straightforward explanations, and prompt service. His work includes retirement planning, life insurance strategies, income protection, accredited-investor alternative investments, financial consulting, and real estate planning and negotiation support.
Doug previously served as Vice President in the Investment and Insurance Division at Heritage First Bank. This role provided experience within a structured financial institution while advising clients on planning and protection strategies. The experience strengthened his understanding of institutional finance and complemented his work as an independent advisor.
He holds multiple securities and insurance licenses, as well as the Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) designation. This designation reflects specialized training in working with older adults, including retirement, tax, and estate planning. His focus often centers on helping clients maintain stability and independence as financial and personal circumstances change.
Doug earned both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is also certified in General and Domestic Mediation through the Justice Center of Atlanta. As a mediator, he brings patience and structure to emotionally difficult situations, listening carefully and guiding people toward workable solutions.
Referee Doug Shows continues to represent a career built on accountability, preparation, and steady judgment, showing how experience gained over time can remain valuable across officiating, financial advising, and mediation while consistently serving others with clarity and balance.
