Summary

Dr. David Jang is the founder of Olivet University and has lived a life devoted to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and advancing the Kingdom of God. From his earliest work, he focused on reaching people in restricted areas, often walking long distances and later turning to digital media as a way to expand the mission field. His vision for Olivet University was to create a place where disciples and leaders could be trained to continue the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19) with dedication and faith.

David Jang was born in 1949 and pursued his academic journey with a strong commitment to excellence. He earned a Bachelor of Theology and a Master of Divinity from Hanshin University, followed by a Master of Arts in Communications from Yonsei University. He later achieved a Ph.D. in Public Administration of Social Welfare from Dankook University. During his studies, he was influenced by an American missionary renowned for his mission strategy and by a Korean church historian and leader who later played a pivotal role in establishing Olivet University Korea.

In 2004, David established Olivet University in a basement in San Francisco, drawn to the city’s diversity. The institution began as a theological seminary but soon expanded into schools of music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university later grew further by adding business and language education. In 2005, it relocated to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension Campus, providing the space and resources necessary for its development. By 2009, the school earned accreditation from the Association for Biblical Higher Education. As International President, he worked to extend the university’s mission worldwide and served on the North American Council of the World Evangelical Alliance.

His influence also reached into Christian media. He founded Christian Today, Christian Daily Korea, and Christianity Daily International, while also being part of the founding team of The Christian Post. Christian Daily International was recognized by the Evangelical Press Association in both 2024 and 2025 for its journalistic excellence. Dr. Jang also leads the Holy Bible Society, focusing on expanding access to the Scriptures through digital technology.

He went on to found Apostolos Missions and more than ten other mission organizations focused on evangelism and discipleship. He also founded Diakonos, a fellowship of deacons, and emphasized the importance of both direct missionary service and business as means of spreading the gospel. His leadership extended into denominational life when he served as president of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Korea.
