Summary

East Setauket, New York, is home to Christopher Portelli, a business executive and trained engineer whose career has stayed on Long Island while his businesses reach across an ocean. A United States Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal veteran, he has spent more than two decades building organizations in the region. Since 2013, he has served as Managing Director and President of SONOTEC US Inc., the American entity of SONOTEC GmbH. During that time, this German ultrasonic technology manufacturer has grown from a single employee with no customers to a fifteen-person organization supporting eight figures in annual revenue. He owns Alpha Performance Clinic, a men's health and hormone optimization practice with locations in East Setauket and Bohemia, New York. His record shows two qualities repeatedly: technical depth paired with commercial accountability, and service that began in the Navy and continued for two decades with a volunteer fire department.

Christopher Portelli's first profession required getting it right the first time. He served in the United States Navy as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician and reached the rank of Petty Officer Second Class (E-5). EOD numbers among the military's most selective specialties. Locating, identifying, rendering safe, and disposing of explosive hazards, improvised explosive devices and mines and unexploded ordnance among them, calls for precision and composure and puts accountability for consequential decisions on the technician even when information is incomplete.

The State University of New York at Plattsburgh awarded Christopher Portelli a Bachelor of Science in 2004, and the New York Institute of Technology followed with a Master of Business Administration in 2006. Electronic Engineering Technology studies at the State University of New York at Farmingdale advanced his education.

Hauppauge, New York, was where the engineering work started. At MITEQ Inc., from 2001 to 2004, he served as an associate engineer and senior technician on microwave and RF components for defense and satellite communications customers. Next came Veeco Instruments in Plainview, New York, where, from 2004 to 2007, his role combined system engineer and product manager duties across engineering systems and full product lifecycles for advanced semiconductor and industrial process equipment.

An engineering degree paired with an MBA sent Christopher Portelli toward commercial leadership, technology in tow. Bohemia, New York was the next stop, at VJ Technologies, Inc., where, from 2007 to 2011, as Director of Sale,s he led United States sales for a manufacturer of X-ray and computed-tomography inspection systems whose customers came from aerospace, defense, electronics, and additive manufacturing, with product positioning, trade show strategy, and lead generation for long-cycle capital equipment sales his to own.

Edgewood, New York came after that. As Sales Manager at Introtek International, LP from 2011 to 2012, he sold non-invasive ultrasonic sensing technology into medical device and bioprocessing OEM design programs. He gained the application-selling experience he would later use to build a company. Bufab in New York was his final stop before he founded an entity, and from 2012 to 2013, as Director of Sales and Marketing, he ran United States sales and marketing for a global supply-chain partner in fasteners and C-parts, repositioning it toward value-added, total-cost-of-ownership selling.

SONOTEC US Inc. is the chapter most identified with Christopher Portelli, an American subsidiary of SONOTEC GmbH of Halle, Germany, that he founded and leads. The company hired him in 2013 as its only American employee, with no customers and no infrastructure behind him, and full profit-and-loss responsibility for the Americas since then: sales, operations, service, finance, facilities, and personnel. The organization now stands at fifteen people and eight figures in annual revenue, and a twenty-five percent minority equity interest belongs to him.

Everything a founder-operator handles was in scope, starting with the legal and financial infrastructure. The customer base he grew from nothing came to include Amgen, Genentech, Sanofi, Bayer, and Repligen, and he added a national distributor network reaching a second, entirely separate market. With the parent board, he negotiated an expanded mandate for the American entity, securing approval to build in-country calibration and service capability and to carry every product line, removing transatlantic turnaround times as a competitive liability. Hauppauge again became the address when he led site selection, relocation, and build-out of a purpose-built facility supporting sales, service, and inventory for the Americas. He also negotiates material agreements, from customer supply and quality agreements to distributor contracts and intercompany transfer pricing terms with the parent.

He hired the entire staff, and a five-person sales team, the distributor channel, and all marketing and demand generation for the Americas answer to him. The parent's managing directors and board in Germany set the United States commercial strategy, and he defends the forecast that drives their production planning. Colleagues and customers land on the same three words: direct and transparent, relationship-driven, and note an executive who delivers difficult news early rather than managing an account with optimism he does not have.

Alpha Performance Clinic belongs to Christopher Portelli, a practice treating men's health and hormone optimization at two locations: East Setauket and Bohemia, New York. What he observed in the military and the fire service produced the conviction underneath it that men, veterans and first responders, and men in their forties and fifties in particular, are underserved in preventive health and long-term vitality, and respond best to care given without judgment or gimmicks. Much of the operational backbone came from his own work, including patient education materials and clinical protocols, along with a custom practice management application built to meet HIPAA requirements.

The Central Islip Fire Department on Long Island has counted Christopher Portelli as a member since 2002. He rose through every rank, from Lieutenant to Captain, then served seven years as a chief officer, and from 2019 to 2021 he served as Chief of the Department. He commanded emergency operations for about 180 volunteer firefighters, and the COVID-19 pandemic hit during his tenure, requiring him to lead the department through it and draft its formal response protocols amid real uncertainty. Add the Navy service, and Chris Portelli has put roughly twenty-eight years into military and volunteer emergency response.

His giving has a direct source. Christopher Portelli backs the food pantry at St. Patrick's Church in Smithtown, New York, the same pantry his family turned to in his early years. James, his son, defends in number 43 for the 2034 Express East youth lacrosse team, a program his father supports.

Bomb disposal, a fire department, an American manufacturing entity, a medical practice, and a youth lacrosse sideline are not an obvious set; one operating philosophy connects them: take the whole job, build what nobody else will build, be honest, and stay when it gets difficult. SONOTEC US Inc. went from one employee to fifteen on that basis. Pandemic protocols for a 180-member volunteer department came out of it. So did Chris Portelli, who wrote his own clinic's clinical protocols and built its practice management application instead of handing that work to someone else. Christopher Portelli, at home in East Setauket, is exploring executive leadership opportunities where technical depth, commercial ownership, and hands-on operating experience can build something again.
