The University of Iowa Department of Athletics seeks applications for an Assistant Director of Athletics Communications. This is a full-time position with a salary range of $45,000 to $48,000 and includes full University benefits.
The University of Iowa is an NCAA Division I Power Five institution and a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Department of Athletics manages 24 varsity sports programs and related events with a workforce of approximately 225 regular employees and 450 temporary employees. Responsibilities:
Administer athletic communications duties as the primary contact for assigned sports (volleyball, softball, rowing, women’s gymnastics), along with assisting staff in coverage of all sports and events, as required.
Write and edit feature stories and news releases for distribution to local, regional and national media.
Research and assemble records, statistics, rosters, etc., for use in media guides, souvenir programs and other digital publications and resource guides.
Determine and manage content for hawkeyesports.com, the official website for UI athletics.
Generate written feature content, photography, video and other unique coverage for hawkeyesports.com and additional social and new media outlets. Generate, execute, and collaborate on social media plans for assigned sports.
Provide assistance to local, regional, and national media in coverage pertaining to UI student-athletes, coaches, and athletics department staff.
Plan and/or execute photo assignments and manage the database of photographs that are a result of these sessions.
Staff assigned events, home and away.
Assist in writing and designing a wide variety of publications, print and electronic, fliers, brochures, information guides, etc.
Assist in the maintenance of the history of the UI intercollegiate athletics program.
Assist in the supervision of intern and undergraduate staff.
Prepare student-athletes, coaches, and athletics department staff for interviews with local, regional, and national media.

Required qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Demonstrated experience (typically 1-3 years) in athletic communications, sports media and/or public relations or publicity field
• Extensive knowledge of and the ability to:
◦ Creatively produce and manage the design, layout, content and flow of multiple publications for multiple platforms (i.e. “new media”: Web, e-mail, podcasts, digital audio & video, digital photography, social media and print)
◦ Communicate effectively to various forms of media outlets and establish favorable public relations
◦ Work collaboratively with other external relations staff (e.g. marketing, athletic communications, video, photo, graphics) on group projects
Preferred qualifications:
• A minimum of three years of experience in athletic communications/sports information in an NCAA Division I university environment managing media relations and content development.
• Managing media relations for a high profile NCAA Division I sport highly desired.
• Proficient in computer software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and sports statistical software.
• Proficient in social media content creation and management including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snap Chat.
• Familiar with website content management system (please specify system used). Experience with SideArm highly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in feature writing and designing infographics
