Job Summary
Oversees IUPUI’s compliance with NCAA and Horizon League legislation, as well as institutional policies and procedures pertaining to intercollegiate athletics. Ensures compliance monitoring systems operate effectively, assesses eligibility of student-athletes to represent the institution, and advises campus constituents on legislation, policies, and procedures related to intercollegiate athletics. Manages student-athlete services related to compliance.
Supervise the execution and evaluation of a comprehensive compliance system as they pertain to institutional, conference and NCAA rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Reviews and audits procedures on a regular basis to ensure compliance systems are operating effectively. Determine, project, or otherwise monitor student-athlete academic, financial and, and competition eligibility. Advise student-athletes, prospective student-athletes, and athletics staff regarding initial and transfer related eligibility issues. Interpret or provide education on NCAA and conference legislation, as well as institutional policies, for institutional administrators, faculty, athletic department staff, coaches, student-athletes, boosters, and other constituencies.
Investigate and track potential or actual violations of NCAA, League, or institutional legislation, policies, and/or procedures. Prepare reports to document compliance with NCAA and/or League legislation. Author initial eligibility, legislative relief, student-athlete reinstatement, and other waivers for submission to NCAA and/or Horizon League staff. Identify and evaluate case precedent, collect relevant documentation, and conduct adequate investigation to prepare the strongest case possible. Conduct thorough investigations of alleged or potential rules violations in accordance with institutional policies and procedures. Report violations as required. Supervise the Compliance Coordinator and students participating in the legal externship program. Manage student-athlete services related to compliance. Represent IUPUI Athletics on campus, regional and national industry committees.
Level of Decision Making:
Makes frequent and regular independent decisions, sometimes with incomplete information, affecting the institution’s integrity. Must successfully balance conflicting information and competing interests to make decisions in the best interest of the institution. For example, the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Student Services will determine best practices to ensure compliance with changing NCAA and Horizon League legislation, determine whether violations of NCAA legislation has occurred and impose relevant and appropriate penalties, and determine eligibility for students to publicly represent the institution.
REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s Degree plus 3 years of full-time experience in a similar position at a Division I institution, conference, or national office.
Knowledge of NCAA Division I legislation; Ability to successfully manage a detail-oriented environment; Desire to multitask and work independently; Demonstrated familiarity with advanced data management software programs and NCAA databases; Strong interpersonal skills; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Experience working with confidential information; Demonstrated confidence in the ability to make controversial decisions.
