The Richland County Recreation Commission (RCRC) is a nationally accredited park and recreation agency located in Richland County, South Carolina. A special purpose district incorporated in June 1960, the RCRC is governed by a seven-member board that is appointed by the legislature and serve a term of five years with staggered terms. Dedicated to enriching lives and connecting communities through diverse recreational opportunities, the RCRC strives to be recognized as a leader in park management and quality recreation programs to better promote health and improve the quality of life in Richland County. The RCRC provides the community with a number of athletic, recreation, afterschool, and aquatic programs as well as camps and additional services. The RCRC is the primary provider of sports and outdoor recreation to county patrons and offers competitive leagues, tournaments, and instruction along with coaching, classes, and clinics.
The RCRC owns and operates over 40 facilities, located near neighborhoods and communities, and serves the entire unincorporated areas of Richland County whose largest city is Columbia. Covering more than 700 square miles, the RCRC also has several neighborhood parks that have playgrounds, outdoor basketball courts, and picnic shelters. Additionally, the RCRC operates an 18-hole public golf course that also hosts special golf events. The agency has approximately 160 full-time employees and 200 part-time and seasonal employees. In 2006, the RCRC became the first and only recreation agency in SC to be nationally accredited by the Commission of Accreditation for Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). Reporting directly to the RCRC Board, the Executive Director (ED) is the Chief Operating Officer for the RCRC. The ED provides leadership and management for all employees, programs, and activities of the RCRC consistent with the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of the agency. Reporting to the Executive Director is the Chief of Staff. Positions reporting to the Chief of Staff, and comprising the agency leadership team, include the Division Heads of: Community Relations; Facility Operations; Financial Operations; Human Resources; Property Management; and Safety and Security.
The ideal candidate will have at least five years of progressively responsible administrative and management experience in a recreation, physical education, park, community service, athletic, and/or appropriate programming work environment. This exceptional leader and self-starter will have excellent oral and written communication skills along with the ability to establish and accomplish goals while effectively leading a team. He/she will have a bachelor’s degree, and preferably master’s degree, in public or business administration, recreation, parks management, physical education, or sports management along with a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification.
