The Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletics Communications oversees all public relations and media relations activities, budgets, including supervision of full-time, part-time, student, and game day staff. Serves as the point person for comprehensive integrated communications and marketing strategies which utilize communications tools, with special attention to media relations, public relations, social media, digital and graphic content, and web communications. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing media/public relations/promotional strategies and messaging for the department.
Serves as the primary media contact for athletics department, and handles media relations duties (requests, interview schedules, etc.) for the athletics administration, and other sports as assigned.
Serves as the leader of the department’s overall messaging, and spokesperson for the athletics department when appropriate.
Oversees and updates content on RaginCajuns.com, working to develop and improve overall content of the site regularly. This includes, but is not limited to, keeping the overall site updated by working with various groups, creating graphics and generating fresh content, gathering photos for website use and serving as a point person with the website provider. Serve as backup for other staff members’ web, graphic and digital needs.
Serve as managing editor of all content posted on every official athletic department medium (i.e. website, social media, etc.). This individual will be responsible for the development of radio, television, website, social media business opportunities and strategies.
This position is responsible for supervising production (writing, editing, design with InDesign and Photoshop) of all publications and websites (including game programs, media guides and the main athletics website) and is directly involved in the production of all football publications. This position is also responsible for managing agreements with and printing companies for the purposes of producing athletic department publications.
Collaborate with marketing staff, video staff, ticketing staff, multi-media rights staff, and development (RCAF) staff to develop and execute marketing and promotions plans for specified sports, programs, and initiatives for Ragin’ Cajuns Athletics.
Supervises, coordinates and oversees media relation operations for all home contests and events, press conferences, photos days and media days. Serves as point media relations contact for Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns-hosted conference and NCAA championship events.
NCAA Related: Ensures that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations. Seeks interpretations from the compliance staff before acting when necessary. Reports potential rules violations immediately. Completes required compliance paperwork in a timely and efficient manner. Monitors all of their areas and/or programs activities closely to maintain compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Deputy Director of Athletics.
Previous experience in public relations and/or athletic communications at the collegiate or professional level (at least 5 years). Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
The successful candidate should be highly organized, detail-oriented, a good communicator and possess the ability to handle numerous assignments in a timely manner with the flexibility to adjust to unscheduled developments involving immediate attention. Must be proficient in writing, media protocol, public relations and social media.
• Working knowledge (or ability to quickly acquire working knowledge) of Pagemaker.
• Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and StatCrew is ideal.
• Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are required.
• A thorough knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is essential to this position.
• Adherence to all applicable NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations is required.
