Typical Activities
The Director of Development of Athletics (DOD) is the advancement professional assigned to perform fundraising for a dynamic and growing athletics program. Under the direct leadership of the Associate Vice President for Development, the DOD will work with the Director of Athletics, coaches and department leaders and coordinate with other college DODs, Stewardship, Annual Giving and the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations. The DOD will maintain a successful comprehensive individual giving major gifts program that includes planning and implementing strategies for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting top prospects with the goal of annual increases in both the number and amount of gifts received. The DOD is responsible for maintaining an active portfolio of current and prospective major gift donors.
The DOD will serve as the primary point person for gift reporting of charitable contributions to the Athletics Department. This position requires a strong commitment to philanthropy, effective communication and writing skills, strong prospect research and organizational skills, and a proficient knowledge of all related fundraising, tax, and legal areas.
TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
INDIVIDUAL GIVING PROGRAM
The DOD is responsible for managing a portfolio of prospective and current donors and securing gifts primarily at the major giving ($10,000 or greater) level. Responsibilities include:
• Providing active leadership in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and prospects, including alumni, parents, past student leaders, friends of the university, emeritus faculty, and others;
• Personally visiting with prospective donors and managing the University's relationship with assigned prospects and donors;
• Delivering timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors, press releases, and communication materials;
• Formulating and executing short-term and long-term strategic plans to include specific and measurable targets regarding definite fundraising, prospect management, personal contacts, stewardship activities, and solicitations goals;
• Working closely with the Director of Athletics, department chairs, and coaches to establish charitable giving needs, opportunities and sponsorships;
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships across campus, ensuring that fundraising activities are coordinated with other development staff members and university initiatives;
• Designing and executing effective fundraising and cultivation events;
• Working with staff from the division's advancement services office and prospect strategy staff to consistently ensure the freshness, correctness, and security of the advancement database including prospect, donor, and alumni records;
• Collaborating with the Office of Strategic Communication to market priority programs to on-campus and off-campus constituents through publications and other communication methods, improving awareness, and expanding support;
• Ensuring best practices in donor stewardship activities including appropriate individual and organizational donor recognition;
• Coordinating stewardship of Athletic Department scholarship endowments and awards;
• Planning and conducting sponsorship programs and activities designed to increase the visibility and support for Athletic Department programs which includes creating sponsorship proposals, soliciting potential sponsors, and coordinating fulfillment of sponsorship benefits.
• Effectively communicating university and Athletic Department goals and priorities in support of development;
• May be required to supervise a development associate, student assistants, and other support staff.
UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT PARTICIPATION
The DOD is part of an effective University Advancement team and shall:
• Participate in divisional strategic planning, goal setting, event planning, and project status sessions;
• Maintain the highest standards of campus development procedures and protocols utilizing various forms, report formats, databases, and clearance procedures;
• Collaborate with the Office of Strategic Communication to ensure that all development-oriented pieces, communications, and events adhere to campus-wide and divisional graphics and professional communication standards;
• Integrate development efforts with central advancement staff and the various services in place including working with the division's gift processing staff to ensure accurate gift recording and receipting;
• File detailed contact reports with central advancement;
• Assist with general donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship as part of a development team that attracts additional support that is important to all colleges, schools, and programs;
• Represent programs, the division, and the university in the community by attending events, participating in local organizations, and serving on community-based boards.

Minimum Qualifications
This position requires a self-starter with strong written and oral communication skills, well-developed computer skills, and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited university required, preferably in the fields of English (writing), business, marketing, or communication. A valid California driver's license and a private automobile with required insurance are required.
• One – three years of experience securing grant and/or sponsorship support from foundation and corporate funders preferably at the six-figure level.
• One - three years of progressively responsible and successful major gifts, sales, or fund-raising experience, including program planning and personal solicitation.
• Excellent oral and written skills required to write successful grant proposals and appeals, and communicate effectively with a variety of constituents, including high-profile leaders and donors.
• Knowledge of the financial structure of donations, grants, and contracts including cash, gifts-in-kind, stocks, securities, planned gifts, endowments, and real estate is required.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, on and off campus, serving in a leadership role, and as a liaison and representative of the department, division, college, and the university is required. Must demonstrate accepted business and professional etiquette in all dealings with constituents and colleagues.
• Demonstrated ability and success in donor/client identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of foundations, corporations, and individuals at the major giving level of support.
• Ability to assess and interpret the needs and wishes of prospective donors, and to translate these into effective action plans.
• Ability to gather data, analyze information, and prepare reports.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends when required due to grant deadlines, donor meetings, events, and activities.
• Demonstrated ability to reflect the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with development and research databases such as Advance, Raiser's Edge, Reeher, and/or Foundation Directory strongly preferred.
• Advanced degree preferred. Experience working in a higher education setting desired.
