Position Purpose:
The AD is responsible for ensuring the delivery of a high level co-curricular athletics program -- an integral part of the Landon School’s overall educational program -- and for communicating and advancing the goals and objectives of the program to students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, administration, trustees, and others.
Responsibilities
• •Oversee and promote overall success of co-curricular athletics program
• Support School and its leadership by embracing and supporting the Landon mission/philosophy and all School policies and procedures
• Ensure full alignment of co-curricular athletics program with the above
• Exhibit and communicate to others a strong personal commitment to the importance of honor, respect, sportsmanship, and civility.
• Stay abreast of innovations in sports science and nutrition to ensure program stays current in advancing student health and wellness, safety, and achievement
• Demonstrate commitment to the School’s teacher-coach-mentor philosophy; maintain overall athletics department/coaching philosophy; and develop associated athletics policies and procedures
• Work to promote high standards of program competitiveness and accountability
• Manage athletics staff
• Build, maintain, and supervise an effective and collaborative team of athletic administrators, trainers, and coaches
• Participate in hiring of all athletics-oriented staff, including all teacher-coach mentors
• Ensure appropriate staffing of all coaching roles throughout the school
• Provide for appropriate orientation to all new coaches and athletics professional development for all staff.
• •Oversee budgeting and athletics facilities
• Oversee and plan athletic department budget, including the purchasing of equipment and uniforms and all appropriate maintenance and inventorying
• Ensure safe usage, care, and condition of all equipment, facilities, and fields.
• Ensure appropriate budgeting for athletics-related capital expenditures in conjunction with Director of Building and Grounds and CFO.
• Partner with other admin to connect the school to strategic external constituencies through creative use of the school’s athletic facilities.
• Manage athletics related logistics
• Oversee the scheduling of all athletic events and work with staff to plan logistics for all athletic contests, including transportation, hiring officials, parking, fielding logistical questions, crowd control, etc.
• Attend as many athletics events as possible at all levels
• Maintain accurate records of athletic results and coordinate the selection of any awards winners and planning of any awards ceremonies
• Steward relationships and communicate effectively
• Maintain positive and supportive relationships with the school’s students, parents, coaching staff, and alumni as well as various internal and external constituencies
• Ensure information regarding Landon athletics program is actively, appropriately, and accurately conveyed to the press and other external groups, effectively using all available new technologies
• Proactively market quality of Landon athletics program to internal and external audiences, including appropriate, proactive retention efforts for all current students
• Actively support the work of the Admissions Office and participate in admissions decision making meetings
• Actively partner with coaches and the Co-Directors of College Counseling to support student-athletes who intend to participate in athletics at the college level.
• Maintain interscholastic and conference (IAC and others) relationships; ensure alignment between School practice and league standards; represent school in all league discussions
• Maintain contact with officials’ associations and opponents re: schedules and confirmations
• Serve on School’s senior administrative team
• Report at least annually to the Board of Trustees.
• Coach as able and appropriate, but no head coaching responsibilities
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Headmaster
Qualifications
• At least a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline (masters preferred) plus 5-7 years of experience as an Athletics Director at either the high school or collegiate level
• Coaching experience in an educational setting with athletes grades 3-12 and experience with mentoring and evaluating coaches
• High degree of integrity, discretion, and trustworthiness
• Philosophical alignment with school’s teacher-coach-mentor approach; commitment to the educational value of sports and to the proper balance between academic excellence and athletic achievement
• Proficient, organized, detail-oriented and capable manager of people, program, and budgets
• High expectations for student and adult conduct inside and outside of competition
• Competitive, solutions-oriented, industrious, passionate about achieving results
• Skillful communicator – in both writing and speech – and facility in the use of current technologies
• Demonstrated ability to work with others, including students and families from a variety of backgrounds
