General Description: This position coordinates and disseminates information concerning the University of Tennessee Athletics programs and communicates information to local and national media and other groups such as alumni, letter winners, faculty, students and fans. This position establishes relationships with local and national media in promoting Tennessee Athletics and also helps to direct the Media Relations Department’s digital and social strategy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Primary responsibility is to serve as the primary media relations contact for Tennessee’s volleyball and softball programs.
•Develop and execute a multi-faceted promotional strategy for the aforementioned programs.
•Collaborate closely with local, regional and national media outlets—as well as Tennessee’s VFL Films staff—to pitch and execute story ideas promoting teams and individual student-athletes and staff members.
•Help coordinate media availabilities for each of their sports.
•Ensure accurate and up-to-date information on selected sports is available daily via Internet (UTsports.com) and social media platforms for sports as assigned.
•Assist with the training of the media relations undergraduate student intern staff.
•Serve as liaison between the athletic department and media, general public and University community.
•Help manage media relations logistics associated with selected athletic events.
•Assist with projects within the athletic department presented by the Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations.
•Must be willing to work/travel on nights and weekends, and should be available to work home football games when the fall sports schedule allows.
•Other duties as assigned (while not currently planned, sport-specific responsibilities may change from year to year).
Required Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.Experience: At least one year of previous experience in an NCAA Division I media relations/communications office, professional sports franchise, or comparable work environment. It’s preferable that candidates have previous full-time experience as a primary sport contact at the Division I or professional sports level.
Competencies/Skills:
•Demonstrated capacity for strategic thinking and strong PR sensibilities.
•Strong writing and verbal communications skills.
•Proficiency with Stat Crew software.
•Ability to serve as an official scorer for softball.
•Ability to create compelling and engaging live social media content.
•Advanced knowledge of PC and Apple computers.
•HTML coding ability.
•Basic video-editing skills.
•Ability to develop and maintain positive personal relationships with internal and external constituencies.
•Certain technical knowledge is required, including demonstrated experience with Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, SIDEARM and The Automated Scorebook (Stat Crew).
•Broad working knowledge and familiarity with NCAA and SEC rules.
