To coach, recruit, condition, evaluate, manage, and budget for the swimming and diving team within the University mission, as well as instruct HPES 1549. Further, to market, manage, plan, budget, coordinate, schedule, staff, and facilitate all events and programs in the Beeghly Aquatics Center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Head Coach Supervises and manages subordinate personnel; interviews applicants and makes hiring recommendations; trains and orients new employees; monitors and evaluates job performance; monitors and approves employee leave requests; ensures compliance with university policies and procedures; receives employee complaints and attempts to resolve the issue; assigns and issues lower level corrective action in accordance with university policies and procedures; receives and adjusts/responds to grievances; investigates and effectively recommends more severe discipline action (e.g. major suspensions, terminations, etc.) as warranted.
Provides leadership for team; establishes coaching strategies and teaching methods to develop student athletes’ skills and teamwork; analyzes performance of team and adjusts strategies as needed; develops policies and procedures for student athletes and coaches.
Oversees the administration of the team budget; establishes and allocates budgeted expenditures for various aspects of team operations (i.e. travel, equipment, recruiting, aid, marketing, etc.); authorizes the expenditure of funds for team operations; monitors expenditures to ensure that they adhere to proscribed limitations; ensures that all expenditures are properly documented and in compliance with university and NCAA guidelines; prepares expenditure reports as requested.
Plans and develops team promotional strategies for fundraising, recruitment, public relations, and other marketing activities; attends promotional events, community activities, and fundraisers; prepares promotional material for distribution (e.g. team background, participant bios, letters of interest, etc.); prepares and delivers speeches and presentations at local and community groups, fundraisers, athletic events, etc.
Develops and oversees the administration of policies and procedures with respect to academic expectations for team members; communicates with academic advising staff regarding athlete academic performance; meets with athletes to review course load issues, degree requirements, course selections, etc.; counsels athletes on performance issues, study skills, and techniques for academic success.
Oversees assigned course loads; compiles lesson plans and related course materials; receives and responds to student inquiries; provides instruction to students in applicable subject matter; reviews student performance to determine appropriate grade or credit.
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance
Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
Aquatics Coordinator
Develops, implements, and updates the Aquatic Center Policy and Procedure Manual for the aquatic center.
Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, evaluates and terminates student staff and life guards for the aquatics center, including providing certification in life guarding; verifies and submits student staff payroll for the aquatics center.
Coordinates Aquatic Center staff work schedules in accordance to state mandated requirements of pool usage for academic classes, instructional recreation sessions, open recreation use, varsity athletic practices and competition, special events, sponsored age group programs and other community based Aquatic Center use; verifies hours of programming and staffing, generates invoices, and submits billing for Aquatic Center for off-campus groups and generates department chargebacks for on-campus groups. Sets pool use schedule for opening/closing times, special events, classes, etc.
Maintains accurate records regarding health, safety, discipline, and incidents occurring in the aquatics center; coordinates verification procedures, maintains records of state mandated certifications and cross over training to any new certification materials of Aquatic Center staff; coordinates and conducts in-service training seminars every semester.
Maintains, repairs, and conducts inventory for program equipment for the aquatics center.
Assists with annual budget development for the aquatics center.
Coordinates verification procedures and maintains records of state mandated certifications as well as CPR and Blood Born Pathogen training for all staff within the Aquatic Center; maintains communication with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Safety to coordinate pool closings when warranted for health and/or safety reasons.
Maintains the weekly pool/spa operation report form 52-19 rev (06 04) for Beeghly Center Natatoriums daily pool side chemical checks in accordance with Ohio Reviewed Code chapter 3701 31 Public Swimming Pools or Spas for the Department of Environmental Health and Occupational Safety; assures daily pool side chlorine and pH levels are taken every four hours the pool is in operation; maintains daily pool chemical records.
Assures the pool water temperature is maintained between 81 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit and the pool area temperature is maintained between 82 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit; assures the pool bottom is cleaned when needed; assures the physical characteristics of the pool which includes water level, gutter level, water clarity, pool bottom conditions, and water surface conditions are checked daily; institutes policy changes when deemed necessary in accordance with State Health Code 3701-31; places appropriate signage on all entrances to the pool when the pool is closed due to unforeseen circumstances and removes signage and informs appropriate personnel once the pool is reopened.
Coordinates faculty/staff lockers and lock usage and schedules yearly cleaning of lockers; performs daily inspection of locker rooms for health and safety concerns; makes necessary communications to correct concerns when warranted.

OTHER FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Videotapes practices, games, and strength training sessions as directed.
Manages equipment inventory and related duties as directed.
Develops and manages strength training program as directed.
Drives passenger vans as required.
Performs any and all other related duties as assigned or directed in order to promote, further, and ensure the effective and efficient operation of YSU.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Supervision is exercised over Assistant Coaches, Life Guards, and student staff.
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Athletics
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
In accordance with Department of Labor (DOL) strength ratings, this position performs light work.
Bachelor’s degree; minimum of four (4) years of successful collegiate swim coaching and recruiting experience with a minimum of two (2) years at the NCAA Division I or II level; maintains required certifications/licensures; demonstrated skill in training and instructing collegiate student-athletes; advanced knowledge and experience in managing intercollegiate sport team that includes exercising independent discretion and judgment; knowledge of and proficiency in NCAA rules and regulations; ability to analyze situations and develop solutions; travel and non-traditional hours; valid driver’s license.CPR/AED/First Aid; ARC Lifeguard Instructor (LGI); ARC Lifeguard Instructor Trainee (LGIT); Certified Pool/Spa Operator;
