Harold Alfond Director of Athletics
Colby College, located in Waterville, Maine, and a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), is seeking a dynamic, collaborative and energetic leader to become its next Harold Alfond Director of Athletics. The Director will oversee the continued transformation of Colby athletics into one of the nation’s premier Division III programs.
Founded in 1813, Colby is one of America’s most selective colleges. It is home to a community of 2,000 dedicated and diverse students from around the globe, one-third of whom participate in intercollegiate sports. Nearly three-quarters of Colby students are involved in fitness and recreation activities in the athletics department.
Under the leadership of President David A. Greene, Colby is building on a strong foundation while remaining committed to excellence, to supporting students, faculty and staff at the highest levels, and to the College’s deep liberal arts traditions. Many of the College’s recent initiatives are attracting national attention, including new, innovative academic programs and partnerships with renowned research institutions, strengthened connections between the liberal arts and the world, efforts to revitalize downtown Waterville, and significant capital projects for performing arts and athletics.
One of the most extensive capital projects will be the construction of a new, state-of-the-art athletics complex. Destined to be one of the best Division III facilities in the country, the 350,000 square foot athletics center will include an indoor track and field competition center, aquatic center, including Maine’s first 50 meter pool, squash center, gymnasium, hockey arena, fitness center and studios as well as training rooms and coaching suites. In 2017, the College will open three new relocated competition and recreational fields, including a practice field, a competition soccer field, and the Bill Alfond Field, which will continue to be used for competition for field hockey and lacrosse.
The next Harold Alfond Director of Athletics will oversee 32 intercollegiate sports – 16 sports for women, 15 for men, and one co-ed team – as well as all club and intramural sports. The Director must be committed to Division III athletics at the highest level of excellence, to advancing Colby’s mission, values and goals, and to providing visionary, creative, and decisive leadership.
Reporting to the provost, the Director will be expected to guide and mentor coaches as well as other athletics staff members with an unwavering commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience and success of the entire athletics program. The Director also serves as the department’s primary representative in interactions with other leaders on campus. In this role, the Director will articulate the athletics department’s vision and strategy, listen closely to the perspectives of others in identifying opportunities to expand the impact of Colby Athletics across the country, and maintain an unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion.
