Function of Position:
The director of athletics is responsible for providing administrative direction and oversight for all intercollegiate athletics staff, programs, facilities and activities. The director is accountable for shaping and building the department’s reputation on institutional, conference, regional and national levels. The reputation will be established not only by the performance and character shown on the field of play, but by overall academic performance of the members of each of our teams.
The director is responsible for ensuring compliance with all college, conference, regional and national affiliation regulations. This position must sustain a culture of sportsmanship, professionalism, and respect at all levels. The director will manage the overall athletic budget while approving all expenditures in a fiscally responsible manner. The director will also provide leadership in the area of fundraising, marketing and community development.
This position serves as an enthusiastic and informed ambassador for initiatives central to the College’s commitment to excellence, innovation and efficiency in serving a diverse student body and in supporting a diverse faculty and staff. The director of athletics is responsive to emerging issues and opportunities. The position will support MCC’s regional and national reputation as a leader among best practices colleges.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
• Provides executive leadership for the athletic program at the highest level
• Gives recommendations to the Vice President and other appropriate members to improve the scope and quality of the Athletic Program and Facilities
• Gives direction to and provide support for coaches, administrative staff, student-athletes and support staff
• Ensures an environment that promotes a commitment to strong academic achievement, student retention and graduation
• Ensures compliance with the eligibility requirements of the National Junior College Athletic Association, the conduct regulations of the college and the principles of good sportsmanship
• Provides and arrange supervision of all home athletic events
• Develops and administers the Athletic Department budgets of the college and the MCC Association, Inc. and ensures compliance with budget policies and procedures.
• Implements fundraising activities to generate revenue to support the Athletic Department and Athletic Excellence Program
• Delivers strong and affirmative leadership in the refinement and implementation of the department’s strategic plan, aligning department plans with the college’s mission, value and strategic goals
• Maintains appropriate athletic-department policies, procedures and practices, while ensuring consistency with all college policies and requirements, all state and federal laws, including Title IX compliance
• Leadership and service at the Conference, Regional and National levels to provide guidance and support in advancing the mission of community college athletics, giving exposure to MCC at all levels and ensuring MCC’s commitment as a leader nationally
• Collaborates with the college’s Campus Events Department to manage the Athletic Department Facilities
• Collaborates on marketing and promotion of the department
• Responsible for the development and implementation of advisement and orientation services and programs
• Ensures a comprehensive program of prevention and rehabilitation for student athletes
• Oversees a comprehensive program that meets the needs of students not involved in college athletics
• Performs additional duties as assigned by the Vice President, Student Services

Required Qualifications:
• Earned bachelor’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited higher education institution
• Minimum of five years’ experience in the administration of a college athletic, intramural and recreation program
• Ability to lead a professional staff in a comprehensive organization
• Experience working in a diverse and inclusive environment
• Understanding of athletic eligibility rules and regulations and Title IX compliance
Preferred Qualifications:
• Earned master’s degree in a related curriculum from a regionally accredited higher education institution
• Understanding of NJCAA and/or NCAA eligibility rules and regulations
• Coaching experience at the collegiate level
