Major Duties
Under general supervision, the Assistant Director, Sports Communications assists in the implementation of a comprehensive plan to cover CSUN Athletics’ NCAA Division I sports program, focusing specifically on assigned sports. The position will handle media relations, statistics and create online and printed materials for external use. The position selects and supervises essential gameday staff; operates within the scope and intent of NCAA, Conference and University regulations; assists in the planning and preparation of preseason and postseason media information, guides, event programs, news releases, feature stories and promotional materials for distribution to press, radio, television and community and online; sends daily news releases to local, regional and national news outlets; works with the CSUN Sports Network to create video content highlighting coaches and student-athletes; records results and statistics in all sports and distributes to news media, opponents, conference and NCAA offices; seeks out alternative exposure and publicity opportunities to promote All-American, All-Conference, All-Academic, Hall of Fame and similar honors for Matador athletes and coaches; supervises department interns and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university with Bachelor's degree in a related field. Master's degree preferred. Equivalent to two years of full time professional or technical experience in public affairs, media relations, marketing and/or market research. Equivalent of three years of sports information experience, preferably at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level athletics program desired.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
General knowledge of practices, methods, and procedures related to public affairs and marketing programs; working knowledge of protocols and institutional etiquette related to public relations; and basic knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to written materials. Working knowledge of adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Stat Crew, and website and broadcast software. Strong oral and written communication, organizational, and management skills; as well as excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to multi-task, be self-motivated, highly organized, work on deadline, pay close attention to detail, work effectively in a diverse university, community and athletic department environment.
