The University of New Haven invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation.
Profile of The University of New Haven: The University is a private, comprehensive institution recognized as a leader in experiential education. Founded in 1920 on the campus of Yale University in cooperation with Northeastern University, the University moved to its current West Haven campus in 1960. The University is located on a hilltop campus overlooking Long Island Sound and the city of New Haven, midway between New York and Boston. The University also operates a satellite campus in Italy, and offers programs at several locations throughout Connecticut and in California and New Mexico.
The University of New Haven provides its students with a combination of liberal arts education and hands-on career and research opportunities. The University enrolls approximately 6,800 students, including nearly 1,800 graduate students and 5,000 undergraduates – the majority of whom reside in University housing. Through its College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and Tagliatela College of Engineering, the University of New Haven offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Under the leadership of Dr. Steven H. Kaplan, the University has made extraordinary progress during the past decade and has invested more than $180 million in new construction and capital improvements. Over the same period, the University has doubled the size of its operating budget and exhibited a pattern of rising budget surpluses and enrollment growth. From 2004 to 2015, the undergraduate population nearly doubled, and the quality of the student body has consistently improved.
THE ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS AND RECREATION
Reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment Management, the Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation will provide strong leadership and strategic direction in overseeing a successful Division II athletic program, intramural sports, and recreational activities. He or she will be expected to recruit the best possible coaches and staff and maintain the exemplary record of Debbie Chin, the retiring Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation—a record that was built on strategic planning, outstanding achievement, and unquestioned integrity.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Masters Degree is preferred. Strong candidates will also have considerable executive level experience in the leadership of a Division II program. He or she will have the ability to both recruit the best possible coaches and staff and work effectively with faculty, administrators, and alumni.
The preferred candidate will also possess the following attributes:
Strong strategic planning and managerial skills; comprehensive knowledge of critical compliance related activities; effective supervisory and evaluation skills as they relate to coaching; extensive budget and financial management skills; In depth understanding of the needs of student-athletes, and commitment to their educational pursuits; Strong public relations.
