Position Summary
The Director of Athletics plans, administers, and directs intercollegiate athletic activities in college or university: Interprets and participates in formulating extramural athletic policies.The Director of Athletics will also employ and discharge coaching staff and other department employees on own initiative or at direction of board in charge of athletics. The Director of Athletics coordinates with the Director of Sports Information on preparation and dissemination of publicity to promote athletic events and will oversee the plans and coordinate activities of coaching staff. The Director of Athletics will prepare the budget and authorize department expenditures. The Director of Athletics will be responsible for the development of a comprehensive fundraising plan incorporating both operational and capital fundraising initiatives. The Director of Athletics will plan and schedule sports events, and oversee ticket sales and concession sales activities. The Director of Athletics certifies reports of income produced from ticket sales, concessions and venue rentals.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Must have knowledge of federal and state regulations including Title IX, NCAA guidelines, and University policies.
Must have comprehensive knowledge of the NCAA Division I regulations and philosophy.
Must possess good moral character with conduct consistent with the university and state code of conduct.
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education
The successful candidate must have an advanced degree in an appropriate field.
Required Work Experience
The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven record of professional and personal integrity, fundraising & development for both operational & capital needs goal attainment, and management of a diverse ethnic environment. The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years' experience in college athletic administration at the NCAA Division I level. The successful candidate will also ensure all athletic events and activities are conducted and implemented in accordance with federal and state regulations including Title IX, NCAA guidelines, Southland Conference and University policies. A comprehensive knowledge of the NCAA Division I regulations and philosophy is required. The successful candidate will share in the commitment to student success that defines UIW and to student athletes' winning attitude in the classroom and on the playing field. UIW athletes traditionally earn a cumulative grade point average greater than 3.00. Must be of good moral character with conduct consistent with the university and state code of conduct.
Description of Job Duty
Duties include but are not limited to: strategic planning and budgeting; operational and capital fundraising compliance oversight; personnel management; fiscal oversight; year-round facilities management; and involvement with the coaching staff in recruitment and retention of student athletes. The athletic director will oversee the senior coaching staff in the sports of men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, track and field, tennis, soccer, swim and dive, as well as volleyball, football, synchronized swim, softball, baseball and fencing. Additional responsibilities will include oversight of the directors of the athletic training program, the compliance office, sports information, events coordinator and the spirit squad. The athletic director will also promote positive relationships between student athletes and the community, particularly in areas of community service. The position may require some teaching responsibilities. Other duties as assigned.
