Job Description
General Summary:
The role of Director, Transportation Operations is to be responsible for all domestic inbound and outbound transportation operations to and from eleven Distribution Centers (DCs) within the Family Dollar network and over 300 suppliers. This person will also be responsible for cost management, on-time service performance to all parties; dedicated contract carrier management, asset maintenance oversight, transportation and logistics planning, transportation support functions and the supervision of a 300 plus staff. They are also responsible for developing the vision and strategy for the transportation business unit enabling the team to meet strategic business operational goals and objectives. This position is responsible for embracing Family Dollar’s store-centric commitment to customers, customer service and sales.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Leads multiple DC site locations, with multi-faceted transportation operations, including revenue share programs, meeting or exceeding cost and service goals.
2. Develops and monitors budget allocations, expenditures and related financial activities for all domestic inbound and outbound transportation in and out of all eleven DCs to include the outbound delivery to over 8,000 stores.
3. Oversee hiring, training and development of all transportation department associates in all 11 DCs, as well as the SSC. Manage issues related to human resources and personnel management in an appropriate and compliant manner.
4. Responsible for developing and maintaining operational execution SOPs for Transportation related processes and that each are continually up to date.
5. Create capital and operating budgets for the outbound transportation network, including vendor capacity, staffing, supplies and equipment needs.
6. Assist in network design optimization improvements, software implementation and development for efficiency and cost containment. Ongoing development of partnerships with industry transportation carriers in truckload shipping to ensure the securement of capacity to deliver freight safely and on time to the distribution and store network.
7. Actively collaborates with internal stakeholders and associates on continuous improvement initiatives to ensure that the supply chain and transportation operations operate at optimal efficiency to mitigate costs and deliver superior business results.
8. Oversee dedicated carrier procurement with multiple vendors, to include contract and rate negotiation and to support operational execution strategies to improve cost and service results.
9. Proactively monitors the delivery service to stores and communicates performance metrics to all key stakeholders, while continuing to increase performance through on-going process improvement. Collaborates with internal associates and external personnel/vendors to establish strong partnerships and to facilitate open communication in ensuring optimal operational execution.
10. Assist in the identification and implementation of continuous improvement opportunities and customer satisfaction opportunities to deliver superior service.
11. Analyze network data to develop operational action plans for improved service, network optimization, performance improvement and/or expense management.
12. Oversees vehicle preventive maintenance programs and activities for the purpose of ensuring safe and timely delivery of product to stores.
13. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s degree required in Business or Logistics required. Master’s Degree in related area preferred.
Experience: Minimum 10 years leadership in Transportation/Supply Chain Operations. Experience with fleet operating models, carrier management, project management, contract negotiations and customer service required.
Job Related Skills: Excellent oral, written communication, strong planning, organizational and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of industry trends, FMCSA, DOT, and state and federal transportation laws preferred.
Computer Skills: Experience with MS Office Suite (including Access) required
