With 28,000 stores across 75+ markets, Starbucks’ success requires a world-class, data-driven approach to food safety and product quality. At the heart of this world-class food safety capability is the Global Food Safety Quality Strategy & Analytics team. This role will lead this team in providing peerless strategy development, operational execution, and analytics leadership across all of Starbucks food safety & quality functions. This role is ideal for a broad thinker who is also comfortable with driving change and organizational excellence. The leader will ideally be a partner who is capable of working across a broad spectrum of activities at a moment’s notice: at one moment, leading teams in developing hypothesis-driven problem-solving approaches, and at the next, building compelling executive story telling materials to connect our team’s science-driven work to the broader Starbucks business priorities.
This role creates value by leading a team focused on driving organizational operational excellence, evolving our function’s strategic plan for building next-gen retail food safety and quality capabilities, and leading a growing team of strategy and data analysts in building the foundation for advanced food safety and quality analytics. A successful candidate will be comfortable working independently in ambiguous, unstructured environments while driving adoption of new ways of working, fostering an organizational growth mindset, and further developing organizational maturity.
Prior experience in food safety or quality is not required. A successful candidate will likely have a management consulting, strategy, or business analytics background. This leader will possess strong analytic, storytelling and strategic consultation skills to influence business decisions, company strategy and growth. This leader manages a team of analysts and project managers focused on three core activities:
• Driving operational excellence across all of Starbucks’ food safety and quality mission areas
• Evolving our organization’s strategy and ensuring the strategic pillars are effectively deployed across all levels of our function
• Building new analytics capabilities to further enable our mission of preventing food-borne illness and delighting our customers and store partners
Summary of Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Evolve the long-term food safety and quality strategy to ensure Starbucks stays at the cutting edge of deploying retail food-borne illness prevention strategies and ensuring our products delight our customers
• Own the org’s Rhythm of Business to ensure time and attention are focused on the right issues with the right solutions
• Serve as a key ambassador to business-facing executives across the enterprise and build strategic partnerships with these functions. Proactively engages with leadership across the enterprise, identifying opportunities to influence through data & insights and ensuring broad visibility to the team’s work and insights
• Own and extend the analytics road map and vision for developing next-generation analytics approaches in the food safety and product quality space. Build strong partnerships with IT to ensure food safety and quality analytics use cases are represented on enterprise technology road maps.
• Serve as the organizational center of excellence for structured problem solving, with an emphasis on building this capability across the entire organization.
• Build and maintains a top caliber team of strategy and data analysts by delivery of insights to leaders in a compelling way to drive change and influence leaders to make decisions
• Drive excellence when solving difficult problems – does not accept first order explanations, challenges teams and individuals to develop robust hypotheses.
• Challenge the status quo and create a culture of curiosity and on-going learning
• Build and sustain strong partnering relationships across Starbucks and externally with key thought leadership organization such as the Corporate Executive Board.
• Leads strategy, AOP and budget process for the function.
• Prepare management reports and be the point of contact for developing and validating KPI’s for the function.
• Drive the implementation of standards, globally
Summary of Experience
• Education: BS, BA, or MBA
• Broad-based team leadership and influencing skills
• Eight years relevant leadership experience (Strategy, Consulting, Business Development, Analytics)
• Demonstrated experience to work and influence seamlessly across functions
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Ability to frequently flex between tactical execution and strategic visioning
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high demand situations and enjoy ‘building capability’
• History of building and growing high-performing teams
• Comfortable with delving into technical domains, rapidly identifying the critical few elements in a given area, and converting these elements into insights for senior business leaders
• Basic proficiency with Power BI/Tableau, fundamental BI concepts. Ideally will have solid applied grounding in business statistics.
• Good understanding of structuring research questions to guide problem solving and scaling solutions
