Position OverviewReporting to the Executive Director, as a member of the site’s Senior Leadership Team, the Managing Director of Development (MDD) is responsible for developing and implementing the fundraising strategy for City Year Seattle/King County to raise and sustain at least $2.5M from the private sector in FY19 and grow annually. The MDD will develop and execute strategic, diversified development plans to raise funds through grant writing, individual giving, and institutional partners, such as corporations and foundations. The MDD is responsible for leveraging existing site relationships and leading independent outreach via targeted prospecting, conference and event attendance, and other activities as needed to build a robust pipeline of potential funders.
The Managing Director of Development will be a highly effective storyteller and relationship builder who can bring to life City Year’s impact in schools using strong presentation and communication skills that capture the hearts and minds of potential donors and inspires them to support City Year’s mission. This position is ideal for someone who is entrepreneurial, with proven fundraising experience, who is a proactive leader, creative problem solver, and strategic thinker with an aptitude for relationship development.
Responsibilities
Fundraising Strategic Plan
In partnership with the Executive Director and the City Year Seattle site board, develop and implement a strategic and diversified fundraising plan that meets the current goal of raising $2.5M from the private sector, and anticipates future needs and growth objectives.
Board Management: In concert with the Executive Director, the MDD will engage the Board to meet critical financial and advocacy goals for the organization. The MDD will be the primary relationship manager for Development Committee or development focused board members. The MDD will also lead in growing board membership.
Individual & Major Gifts: The MDD will ensure individual gifts of $10,000+ are cultivated, stewarded and secured. Currently an Individual Giving Director is managing a portfolio of approximately $550,000 in individual gifts of which nearly 350,000 is in major gifts. The MDD will lead in growing this portfolio.
Institutional Gifts: The MDD will ensure corporate and foundation gifts of $25,000+ are cultivated, stewarded and secured. Currently a team manages institutional donors and new business prospects, securing $2M annually. The MDD will lead in growing this portfolio.
People Management: Directly lead, supervise and coach/grow a team of three development staff professionals, not including a part-time grant writer, prospect researcher, and gift processing team.
Fundraising Events: Lead the planning and execution of large-scale fundraising events with the Development Team, including an annual gala and specialty market events that generate $600,000+ annually.
Development Operations
Lead the Development Operations director in the development business process from donor identification, through collections, to stewardship, ensuring accurate maintenance of records and donor information in the SalesForce database. The MDD will direct monthly pipeline meetings with the Development team and Executive Director to provide updated revenue figures, pipeline reports, and progress towards monthly/quarterly goals. The MDD will identify areas for operational improvements and drive continual improvements of processes.
City Year Culture:
Represent, respect and role model City Year organizational culture and values on a daily basis internally as a member of the site Senior Leadership Team and externally as a representative of the organization.
Organizational Management:
Help shape organizational strategy and play a leadership role in implementing the site's local operating plan as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Work collaboratively with other site departments on a frequent basis and with City Year's national headquarters in Boston.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or previous relevant experience.
• 5+ years of fundraising experience.
• Track record of success in fundraising, including closing six figure gifts.
• Experience leading Board members and staff to support and engage in a development strategy.
• Experience managing and motivating a team to achieve goals.
• Strong interpersonal, networking, and relationship building skills.
• Persuasive written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to meet deadlines, plan ahead, and balance multiple high-profile partner priorities simultaneously.
• Ability to work with and relate to diverse groups of individuals in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial team environment.
• Flexibility and willingness to work outside standard established business hours to meet sudden and unpredictable partnership needs.
• Knowledge of high net worth community via local business, civic, and cultural networks desirable.
• City Year/AmeriCorps experience a plus.
• Experience with Salesforce preferred.
