Managing Director, Programs & Philanthropy
ASME (American Society for Mechanical Engineers) is a world-renowned, member based professional organization focused on serving the technical, educational and other programmatic needs of the engineering and technology communities on a worldwide basis. ASME generates approximately $115 million annually from the sale of products and services and provides a wide range of mission focused programs and activities.
We are seeking a dynamic, visionary leader to serve as Managing Director, Programs & Philanthropy at ASME. Guided by the organization’s strategic objectives, this role has oversight for The ASME Foundation and program areas in support of K-12 STEM education programs, engineering for global development projects and early career development. This includes responsibility for talent development, operations, financial management, marketing, communications and fundraising.
The Managing Director will be accountable for the development and implementation of an accelerated growth strategy which will result in creating best-in-class capacity for program development, institutional and individual fundraising, and thought leadership. This individual must also cultivate highly engaging relationships with ASME members, volunteers, board members, committees and partnering organizations.
Leadership & Management:
1. Provide a clear vision for how ASME Programs & Philanthropy initiatives support the mission of ASME and align with the Society’s strategy and five strategic leadership actions
2. Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration (including risk-return sensitivity, opportunity cost, investment analysis), fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals
3. Actively engage and energize ASME members, volunteers, board members, committees, partnering organizations, and funders for their time, talent and treasure
4. Develop, maintain, and support a strong ASME Foundation Board of Directors: serve as ex- officio and build board involvement with strategic alignment to ASME’s objectives
5. Lead, coach, develop, and retain high-performance staff team
6. Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents
Fundraising & Communications:
1. Expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and global expansion while simultaneously reducing reliance on ASME investment
2. Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand
3. Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities
Planning, New Business and thought-leadership:
1. Design and implement strategic business planning processes for the program expansion into new markets
2. Build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with funders and other stakeholders at an institutional and individual level
3. Develop organizational capacity to be an international thought-leader that publishes and communicates program impact
Candidate Profile and Qualifications:
This exciting opportunity requires an advanced degree preferably in business, engineering or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of senior management experience which spans across fundraising, marketing and public relations. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of effectively leading and scaling performance, an ability to point to specific examples of strategies that have taken the organization to the next stage of growth, and outcomes based organization and staff additional equivalent work experience. Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation. Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget. Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
