The Managing Director, Philanthropy is the strategic leader who drives Synergos’ contribution to the development of high-impact philanthropy around the globe. As part of this, s/he is responsible for overall management, leadership and direction of the Global Philanthropists Circle (GPC), a network of the world’s leading philanthropic families and social investors, committed to using their time, influence and resources to fight poverty and social injustice.
The Managing Director plays a significant role in overall organizational goals, strategies, and policies as a member of the Global Leadership Team, Synergos’ senior management group. S/he works closely with Synergos’ Chair, CEO, and members of the Global Philanthropists Circle and benefits from the ongoing advice and counsel of the GPC Advisory Committee. S/he serves as an ambassador for Synergos both internally and externally and works with staff throughout the entire organization.

Major Responsibilities
• Overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the Global Philanthropists Circle program in ways that contribute to Synergos’ overall goals and mission and also enable GPC members to more strategically address systemic causes of poverty and inequity
• Develop a strategy to maintain the GPC as a leading edge community of trust in serving its membership
• Develop and oversee a successful recruiting and growth strategy for the GPC membership
• Build and grow a Synergos philanthropy program based on the Synergos approach to international development, with a special emphasis on mindfulness and inner work as foundational elements of collaboration (particularly with local communities and multiple sectors of society) and social change
• Manage and participate in events and social media, creating philanthropy activities that extend beyond the GPC to promote Synergos’ approach to philanthropy
• Oversee and supervise a global team
• Serve as member of the Synergos senior management team (the Global Leadership Team), providing guidance and leadership in the overall development of Synergos
• Serve as the staff liaison for the Global Philanthropists Circle Advisory Committee
• Direct a substantiveprogram of affinity groups for cohorts of GPC members that meets their philanthropic interests (currently Shifting the Food Systems, Impact Investing, Refugee issues, Spiritual Civilization, and NextGen Philanthropy)
Key Functions
• Develop and oversee a program of activities and relationship management services for GPC members and prospects that adds to their impact as philanthropists and results in their valuing the GPC community and continuing membership.
• Lead integration of GPC programming with other Synergos activities
• Direct the development and execution of an overall marketing strategy for GPC program to recruit new members to reach the stated institutional goal of maintaining 150 families as members
• In collaboration with the Development unit, ensure that sufficient resources are raised for the team’s strategies and secure grant funding where possible to enrich activities and expand programming
• Maintain and grow the financial contribution from the GPC program to Synergos’ unrestricted funding
• Identify additional services and activities that the Circle and Synergos (including Synergos Consulting Services) can offer members and non-members
• In collaboration with the Communications unit, develop external communications including a strategy to use the GPC website and other methods for both marketing and community building
• Speak and write as an expert on Synergos’ approach to philanthropy, our GPC program, and our overall work
• Develop and monitor GPC budget and ensure that the team achieves specific targets for membership retention, prospecting, and recruiting
• Serve as a resource on the fields of philanthropy and international development trends for both Circle members and for Synergos including Synergos board and senior staff as needed for the overall development, health and effectiveness of the organization
• Contribute to the development of a values-based culture at Synergos, providing leadership around organizational values
Qualifications
• Master’s degree related to philanthropy, international development, public policy or business preferred
• Experience in philanthropy and social investing, including an understanding of impact investing
• At least fifteen years of relevant management experience with a collaborative leadership style
• Minimum of twelve years of experience working in the networks and program management
• Demonstrated ability to work from strategy through execution in collaboration with a global team and constituents
• Outstanding abilities to develop, manage and mentor staff
• Ability to manage complex initiatives with experience in budgets, planning and financial management
• Commitment to effective monitoring and assessment of impact
• An entrepreneurial mindset, able to identify and pursue opportunities with prior experience raising funds and working with donors
• Experience marketing to different constituencies
• Excellent written, verbal and listening communication skills in English; other languages (particularly Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic) a plus
• Work or educational experience in the developing world a plus
• A demonstrated commitment to high ethical standards and values consistent with those of Synergos
